How Do I Shorten My BMX Chain? 10 POINTS?

  • I want to shorten my chain on my BMX but i don't have a chains shorten thingy..... Is there another way to shorten the chain like a flat screwdriver and hammer and importantly how do i do it. Please enter in steps. Please i need to know how and i will give 10 points to the person who enters the right method which work thanks

    Needed: Chain breaker. $7 at a bike shop. $4 at Wal-Mart. Master link $1 at bike shop. Very easy with the chainbreaker, especially if you are putting on a masterlink. 1. Use the chain breaker to remove two pins leaving the smaller inner section of the chain at each end. 2. Reconnect with the master link. Do not try the screwdriver method, you will just end up hurting yourself or damaging your chain.

Your frame should have a horizontal drop-out (the part where your hub bolts on). Try loosening the bolts and sliding the hub backwards towards the opening on the drop out. This should pick up most if not all of the chain slack. Then re-tighten the bolts but when you do re-tighten them make sure to check that your wheel is still straight. If this doesn't work then bring your bike to your local shop and ask them to borrow a chain breaker. A lot of shops will let you borrow a small tool like this to fix the bike yourself in the store or in front of the store. Just be careful though because if you mess up then the store will have to charge you for fixing your mistakes. Good luck!

Get a chain breaker or grind the head off pin of the link you want to remove and push it out with a pin punch or a nail (like a motor bike chain) than connect the chain back up with the joining link. Don't try the screwdriver it stuffs the screwdriver.

Like you said a flat head and hammer all you need to do is stick the flat head into the chain (where ever you wanna cut it) and bang the hammer on it till the link break off but you should have a master link so you can connect it back easily

I bought myself a ChainBreaker it pushes the pin in a link so u can shorten is up then just use it again to put the pic back in, though it would be easier if u had a masterlink

The best way would be to go down to your bike shop, ask or buy a chain breaker (very easy to use item) and remove the number of links you want.
