Who are in the current ICC elite panel of Umpires?

Why do we need umpires from other countries?

  • I mean, an umpire is supposed to be neutral, whether he's home umpire or not. Doesn't this system devalue the umpires? The same accusations and problems continue. Dar was lambasted in Australia for the Hayden dismissal, same happened to Harper in India, not to forget the uproar in Sydney against Bucknor and against Hair and Doctrove in England. If this is the case why can't we have home umpires? A classic case is the high profile match Aus / SA, the top umpires in the ICC panel are not officiating because they happen to be Australians. Your thoughts???

  • Answer:

The mere fact that India protested so vehemently about Bucknor says it all! What would they have said about an Aussie umpire? You must be aware why neutral umpires were introduced in the first place, & it was all to do with Indian umpires. You may not be old enough to remember that, but I assure you I am.The fact is, no matter where the umpire is from, someone is going to whine about it, & you have to be honest and admit that Indians are the biggest complainers. Evan, I have never known you to be unfair, so you will admit that I am right on that score.Ponting has whined about many things, but by & large the umpires weren't one of them. The biggest complainers in Australia are the media, & we all recognise that they just want to sell papers.I know umpires make mistakes & as Benaud said about the Dar/Hayden incident, it was the worst he'd seen in cricket. But once the decision is given where does whining get you?

Having neutral umpires is better, it adds authenticity to the game. ex-- Examiners for school/college/university exams are from different schools.

Blame india for this. They were the ones that demanded neutral umpires, now look at the question your asking. Blame them.

Because if an umpire and a team are of same countries then the umpire may give wrong decisions in way of his nation.

Modern days viewers have the advantage of TV replays, & are better equipped to scrutinise each & every move of the umpire. That is why the umpire is blamed every time. I feel, neutral umpires are employed to avoid controversies than poor decisions. And if a home umpire is employed, and he takes a decision in favour of the home team, he will be blamed for parting with his team. In the case of a neutral umpire, a poor decision will be considered more like an umpiring error than anything else(some people may consider it as differently; but for every aspect, there will be different opinions).

Yep I was thinking that recently. This now robs Australia of having the best umpire in the world, Simon Taufel, to umpire their matches.

Earlier days only the Umpires from the hosting nation were standing as umpires. Some countries, better not to name them, had umpires who were biased in their decisions and favoured the home team. This has created a great ruckus and the cricketing fraternity felt the need for neural umpiring. Initially there was one umpire from the host nation and the other was a neutral umpire. Mr. Ramaswamy of India is the first neutral umpire to be appointed and he stood in a test match in Pakistan. Subsequently elite panel of umpires came into existence. But for a few blatant mistakes for obvious reasons, a majority of decisions are unbiased and though some were genuine mistakes(like Mr. Alim Dhar's decision of giving Hayden out ). Umpires, often complain, though in hushed tone, about the racial abuse thrown on them by the Australian players.

We help them by using the technology that is now available, it should not be looked at as a backward step, it helps make the right decision which is not always possible with one take at 90 MPH. Umpires from certain Countries were really bad in the past and it is probably right to have neutrals nowadays.
