Why do we need to study IT?

Do you need to be great at maths to study medicine? If so, why is maths needed to be a doctor?

  • I am curious whether I would need to be great at mathematics to study medicine, and if so, why is maths important in medicine/to be a doctor? Apart from prescribing the correct dosage, why else is maths needed? Because surely the main thing in medicine/becoming a doctor is practical, I.e. studying the anatomy etc.

  • Answer:

Maths isn't required by most courses at A-level... although it is one of the preferred options. It is needed at GCSE, but again, most courses only specify a pass, only a few require A*, but if you can't get a decent grade at maths GCSE then you might need to rethink your career options anyway, the competition is just too great. Maths comes into its own when you start reading and critiquing medical research. Statistics, statistics and more statistics. Got to understand it.

Maths and Chemistry are pretty basic requirements for medicine. If you look at all the requirement you will see that they are all hard subjects. History is not a hard subject, Maths is! But look at UKAT scores in a search engine to discover how all your results are taken into consideration as well. http://www.nhscareers.nhs.uk/
