How can I make sleep medicine?

I'm sixteen years old and every night i take cold medicine to make me sleep?

  • I switch on and off M: Benedryl - 3 tabs T: Advil-2 tablets W: Benedryl T: Advil Do I have an addiction if I can't fall asleep without them, and if I do try and sleep, I get really figity?

  • Answer:

I suggest that you see a therapist in your area to discover why you are "figity" (I'd say anxious). Many people when it comes to sitting or lying still get anxious as it is a time when they are forced to think... or can't stop their minds racing. Talking to a therapist can help you to relax and more importantly sleep without the need for addictive drugs. Good Luck

It sounds like you may be addicted. You also seem to be taking a lot (3 tablets of Benadryl) What other people suggested (trying to get off of it during spring break, such as Easter break) is a good idea. I just wanted to comment about the person who suggested taking herbal supplements. That's not going to solve your problem. Herbal supplements are not even FDA approved, either. You don't know what all you are getting in those supplements, including the amount of the ingredient you actually want to help you fall asleep. Also, the reason the person is taking Benadryl is due to the side effect caused by the active ingredient, Diphenhydramine HCl, which induces sleepiness. (Diphenhydramine HCl is now being sold in over the counter "sleep medications" too, although, seriously, it's nothing new. People wasting money on something that has already been on the market for years.) If she is taking Advil PM, she is still taking Diphenhydramine HCl to sleep even on the non-Benadryl nights, but she is also taking Ibuprofen when she doesn't need to be taking that pain medication at all. The questioner definitely wants to get off this sleep medication. Good luck! :)

Thats reallly bad for you. As you grow older you will start needing higher dosage of that "drug" to get the same effect you use to. You need to either talk to your doctor about how to stop this addiction, or just don't use it before bed even if you cant go to sleep. Eventually your body will get tired and give in to sleep without the medication, and it will get easier as nights pass.

You are not physically addicted, but you seem to have some emotional need to continue doing this. Advil isn't even a sleep aid. I suggest you stop, even if you have some sleepless nights. Here are some tips on getting to sleep without the use of medication. http://longevity.about.com/od/lifelongenergy/tp/sleep_hygiene.htm

yea when you can't live without something or depend on something (such as smoking) you get fidgety and moody and even angry because you haven't had it. You need to definately see a doctor or therapist asap about that.Taking all those meds could make you incredibly sick

Make a conscious effort to stop using medications for sleep. Using other forms of relaxation (music, excercise, reading, stretching) mayb help you fall asleep faster. I don't think it is appropriate for anyone to diagnose your problem over the web. No licensed professional would ever do this. If the problem is habitual, you may consider ingesting a placebo before bedtime. An example might be a multivitamin or a cheerio. It may seem silly, but you can trick your mind into accepting the substitute as the actions have remained the same. If the problem is physical, I recommend slowly removing the dosage until your body allows itself to be restful. Again, stretching and exercise may help your body's circulation and provide a more comfortable sleep. All the best.

Well since you are asking the question you already know the answer. Yes you have an addiction or a habit. Try this over spring break don't take any, work through the fidgetiness and you probably won't sleep well the first three or four nights but you can get through this. My son went through this and he broke the habit this way Good Luck .... it isn't easy Getall the stuff away from where you can get to it
