The ideal of representative democracy?

Why do you think direct democracy is better than representative democracy in australia?

  • i am doing an assignment where i have to prove that direct democracy is better than representative. so far i mainly see negative points about direct, so i need u to help me find positive ones. any sort of help will be appreciated. thanks:)

  • Answer:

I think direct democracy is a terrible idea. But that said, I'll play devil's advocate. Direct Democracy allows for a pure representation of the Peoples' will. It ensures that every undertaking of government has the support of a majority, thus it would ensure greater social unity. Direct Democracy would substantially weaken the growing power of interest groups who target the MPs, and get subsidies at the expense of people's taxes. Direct Democracy would give the government the greatest possible legitimacy, as there could never be a question of decisions being bought. It would also ensure that "The Will of the People was always first in every dicision. Hope these help.

A form of direct democracy is working well in Switzerland. In a representative democracy it is supposed that decisions made by representatives will in some way reflect the will of the people. You only have to follow electoral campaigns to realise that. But, in reality, once in power representatives will do precisely as they please using weasel language to persuade electors that their decisions reflect public opinion. On occasion they will say they were elected to make decisions on behalf of the people, meaning that they know best and the people are ill informed. That phenomenon is prevalent in all democracies including, I might say, the USA even though there are many benighted souls who will howl that the US is not a democracy but a Republic. Those people proffer the argument that democracy is the tyranny of the majority over the minority What the heck do they think happens in their country with their two party system. There is always one section of their population who feel disenfranchised after an election. The republicans are howling like billyo right this minute.

Concerned!

Democracy, in our current economic system, is nothing more than an illusion and does not exist. It can't work and it doesn't work.
