Citizens ID card?

Obtaining a Spanish ID Card for citizens living in the UK?

  • Hello there, I am a person of dual nationality (English/Spanish) living in the UK. I currently only hold a Spanish passport and do not have a British Passport, and I am looking to go and work in Spain this year. However to work in Spain I either need to get a Spanish ID Card or I need an NIE Number. But to get an NIE Number I believe I first need a British Passport which I'd rather avoid because it will cost me over £100 to get one. SO the other option is for me to apply to get a Spanish ID card at my local Spanish Consulate. But I have heard that it can take months for a Spanish ID card to get processed - in the meantime will I be served with a piece of paper which will allow me to work whilst my ID card is being processed? Many thanks!

  • Answer:

From the age of 14, all Spanish nationals are obliged to have a Documento Nacional de Identidad (identity card). As Spanish citizen you cannot get a NIE (Número de identificación de Extranjeros). Apply for the DNI at the Spanish consulate general which covers your place of residence. http://www.maec.es/subwebs/Consulados/Londres/es/MenuPpal/ElConsulado/Paginas/elconsulado_cglondres.aspx .. http://www.maec.es/subwebs/Consulados/Manchester/es/home/Paginas/home_cgmanchester.aspx ..
