Can you grow garlic from bulb in grow bags?
-
In UK. Can't seem to find any info on this. I don't have any soil in which to grow it, but I absolutely love garlic and eat piles of it every day. I am hoping it is possible that I might grow it in bags in my yard, I have done potatoes like this before succesfully. Any information greatly appreciated. Also, is it possible to grow onions in this fashion? And, are pots better than bags?

Answer:
The grow bags can be a bit shallow for the roots of the garlic so you can cut the bag in two in the middle and stand them up. Personally I find grow bags have inadequate drainage and only enough nutrient for 4-6 weeks growth apart from being too shallow. I think you would be better off with containers or pots with drainage holes or crocks in the bottom and some compost mixed with a little sand. And the same for onions.

A couple of years ago i tried to grow garlic and onions, not in a grow bag but in shallow troughs which i would say are pretty similar. That first year i had no success at all. Although they sprouted and grew tall leaves the actual bulbs when i harvested them were tiny and pathetic, not much bigger than the cloves i had planted in the first place. I thought it was because the trough was too shallow and they hadn't had enough space to grow and do their thing. However, last year my Dad started some garlic off for me in similar troughs and they were well established by the time he gave them to me. I followed his instructions - lots of water and a feed every week (which i hadn't done before) - and when I harvested them they were great, proper garlic bulbs! So i have come to the conclusion that its not the amount of space they have to grow (although obviously they need some space to grow into) but more importantly the amount of water and feed they are given.

Garlic is easy to grow..Stop complicating it... Just a pot, with some soil....Stick the garlic root into the soil and cover to the top of the garlic plant Lots of sun and enough water....Should produce a good crop..... I have no garden, but, grow, tomatoes, garlic chives, parsley and YES..........garlic on my balcony
