Who makes the best geothermal furnace and why?

My furnace makes a loud banging noise when it shuts on and off.?

  • It sounds like someone is banging on it or it is going to explode or something and it happens in different places. Its not actually coming from the furnace it self but from the ducks.

  • Answer:

The change in pressure inside the ducts will cause the sheetmetal ducts to "pop". You may see that some of the ducts that have a large surface area have a break in the surface that goes from one corner to the opposite corner. They will form an X in the large flat surface of the duct. This is to give the dust some rigidity and keep it from making this noise. The banging noise is not a problem, unless it annoys you. If so, get a furnace company to have someone fix this for you. If you can identify the piece of duct that is causing the problem, you can add a small sheetmetal angle to the face in the same manner - corner to corner - with some sheetmetal screws. Good luck.

That's ducts. Ducks are these birds that make quacking noises and fly down here for the winter. I think the sound of the ducts quickly changing temperature can cause a banging sound or the pressure of the air inside it.

Its called "Oil-canning", and caused by either a stopped up filter restricting airflow, or improperly formed ductwork ( No or not enough cross-breaks).
