Is there a way to repair water damaged books?

  • Today I received a (used) book with extensive water damage (many of the pages are actually stuck together) in the mail. Is there any way (short of returning it for my money back) that I can repair the damage myself? I seem to recall once hearing of a method which involved wraping the book securely in plastic and placing it in a freezer, allowing the book to literally freeze dry as the moisture is drawn out of the paper, but in this case the water is already dried, and I'm afraid that I might be forgetting an important step or two...

  • Answer:

Return it, Daniel. As a former graphic designer and image restorer, I can tell you I've received hundreds of water-damaged photographs, some still stuck to the glass. Once the water makes paper stick, it's stuck. Try exchanging it for a book in good condition which is what you paid for, right? If they can't replace it, demand a refund and look for the book elsewhere. A book in that condition should never have been sold.

once the moisture has set in and dried it's gone my man. I mean, try the freezer thing but if that doesn't work you need to return it

Unfortunately, I do not believe there is a way to repair water-damaged books. (I have tried many methods) let me know if you do find one though!
