How do I encourage moss to grow ?
-
I just bought a house recently and in the back yard there was a very poorly made man-made pond right off the side of the deck. I fill it in with dirt and planning to make an extension of the patio by way of these concrete molds that look like stones. I want moss between the spaces in the stones but not sure how to do this. I know you can buy ground cover moss but I want it all through the area (I love the look of moss !) Any suggestions ?

Answer:
Here ya go! ... Use moss spores. This is the most beautiful moss money can buy! Its Kyoto moss, a velvety green moss used in Japanese gardens exclusively...It can be purchased from Joshua Roth directly or from Amazon as well. One packet will cover 3 sq. ft. Hopefully the area that you wish to have moss is in the shade? I used Kyoto moss on my bonsai collection and it is the most beautiful I have ever seen... here is a couple of links for you to checkout.... http://www.amazon.com/Joshua-Roth-Kyoto-Moss-Spores/dp/B000X36W8S Click onto the pictures for a larger view of Kyto moss gardens. http://www.insidekyoto.com/2008/05/koke-dera-kyotos-moss-temple.html http://www.flickr.com/photos/aztore/3689141769/ Joshua Roth Moss Spores are of a variety commonly termed 'Kyoto' Moss, as is prevalent at the Kyoto Gardens in Japan. The beautiful, bright green velvet appearance is weed free, since it is greenhouse grown in sterilized soil. Shelf life is indefinite, as spores are packed in a zip-lock bag within the envelope. A detailed growing guide is included in each packet. Cover up to 3 square feet. 1/2 ounce net. wt. Great for Japanese gardens and other landscape features. The moss grown from these spores are a favorite in Bonsai for it's beautiful, bright green velvety appearance. Unlike most varieties, it remains smooth, even when mature. KEEP IN MIND: Moss DOES like: humidity, coolness, shade or indirect sun. Moss DOES NOT like: Much sun, heat, fertilizer, dry spells, or handling. Old Japanese saying: "Moss is like people, one must have patience". ...Billy Ray

If you paint the areas you want moss with some plain yogurt it will encourage the formation of moss. You do need to take into account the general conditions of the area, if it is in direct sun most of the day it would not be an environment suitable for moss formation.
UNCOLA
If it's on the north side or a shady area just keep it damp all the time and moss will grow.
