What to grow? *Vegetable Garden Greenhouse*?

  • I'm planning to build a Vegetable Garden Greenhouse this Spring, and I would appreciate some suggestions on what to grow (easiest for a beginner) in a temperate Northeast climate like Western New York State (just outside of Buffalo), as well as any other wisdom that might come in handy. I'd like to grow any number of possibilities of the following: Red/white/sweet/etc. potatoes, yams, squash, zucchini, cucumber, pumpkins, eggplant, sweet/hot peppers, red/white/green onions, asparagus, garbanzo/green/kidney/pinto/black/soy/ etc. beans, romaine lettuce, kale, spinach, various mushrooms, tomatoes, garlic, various herbs/spices, various berries, grapes, olives, etc., etc. Which of the aforementioned would be the easiest to grow, considering my WNY climate and beginner status? (Specific details on planting time, length of growing time, type of maintenance, space necessary, types of growing medium, etc. would be appreciated) *The greenhouse is going to be a simple wood/plastic sheeting set up, with undefined dimensions as of yet, so suggestions on the size, shape, etc. of the build would be appreciated as well.

    Alice's suggestion is good. How big do you intend to build this greenhouse. Red/white/sweet/etc. potatoes, yams, squash, zucchini, cucumber, pumpkins, eggplant require a lot of space to flurish.

Stop by the local Cooperative Extension office, and they will give you lots of help, including greenhouse construction plans and vegetable growing suggestions for your area.

I would contact the local University extension for help and advice, then I would start with a simple structure and a few, 6 or so basic small veggies just for the first year and see how it goes, and then if all is well just go crazy next year.
