How do I grow onions and potatoes?

How easy is growing vegi's inside? how fast do they grow? how much space would i need to eat new vegi's daily?

  • all i see is tomato tomato. sadly i hate them lol. i am just wondering if it is possible to grow onions, potatoes, lettuce, snow pea's, water chestnuts in those upside down hanger things. or at least in some small area so i dont have a huge mess to take care off. other than watering. also wondering how fast they grow. would be cool if i could grow them at a rate fast enough that i could have a bunch of them daily and not run out the next day. how many different hangers would i need to grow at that speed. only thing i would need to buy at the store was meat if i could do all that. maybe i am being to optimistic for such a dream of self sustainability. but if it is possible without having to hang 100 of those things in the house that would be nice. any info you could provide would be appreciated =)

I would not recommend the upside down containers for any of those except maybe the peas. Potatoes and onions need more room to grow since the part you eat is growing underground. Water chestnuts grow in water and take quite awhile to grow before harvest. Lettuce isn't likely to do well under those conditions. For indoor growing I would instead recommend using an Aerogarden for the lettuce and if you wanted to grow herbs or spinach. You could also grow all of what you have listed in pots. I would not recommend trying to grow waterchestnuts until you have done a lot of reading on the subject of growing them. Potatoes will need a large pot (about the size of a 5 gallon bucket minimum). Place about 2 - 3 inches of potting soil in the bottom, plant them on top, and then put just enough more soil to cover the potatoes. As the potatoes grow add more potting soil on top. until the bucket or pot is filled with soil. You can get more information about growing vegetables in containers from these books which you may be able to find at your local library http://www.amazon.com/Easy-Container-Combos-Vegetables-Crawfords/dp/0971222096/ref=pd_sim_b_18 http://astore.amazon.com/wwwherbariumc-20/detail/0761116230

I'm skeptical, at best. You'd need to provide "sunlight", A LOT of "sunlight". That means a great many full spectrum grow-lights would be on for 12-16 hours a day. There are other concerns I could address (the potential mess from watering, the difficulty of fertilizing etc.) but I think your question was simply the feasibility of your plan? Herbs COULD be grown, veggies? not so much.

I would at least try to hang them outside. Sunlight through windows is not enough, and using grow lamps would amp up the temperature and cooling bill in your house. Plants also need a different humidity level than a human can live comfortably in. Try square foot gardening. Sounds like what you are looking for.

Veggies cannot grow inside other that in a full sun a greenhouse. If you try all you will get is green and no fruit. They need too much sun and even lights will not work to give you any produce.. My suggestion is to go to a local farm if there are any available in your area and by them them daily. You will be supporting your local growers as well.
