Is there a cure for OCD yet? If not why?

Cure for OCD?

  • Hello, I suffer from obsessive compulsive disorder and as far as i know there is currently no cure for this thing. Doctors say its caused by a lack of serotonin in the brain and serotonin is the chemical that makes people not worry so much about things, so if u have a lack of it.thats why ocd people worry about germs, and wash their hands and if they unlocked the door or not or if a random thought makes them a bad person or not, ect. Why can't they just target the brain that deals with worrying and modify it somehow to make it not worry or something. a surgery perhaps. I'm just wondering what people know out there.thanks

  • Answer:

For severe refractory ocd, there has been some early success performing bilateral cingulotomy which interrupts the pathway of the brain involved in the development of OCD. This can be done surgically or non-invasively with radiosurgery, usually using the Gammaknife. Aloha

That would be great but the medical field isnt there yet...lol All you can do is a take a med thats for OCD and hope it makes you feel better. It can be controlled, not cured. If you cant find the one that works for you, dont give up, youll find one that helps. Meds saved my life.

i wish they did make a pill for that. my grandmother is OCD, in that she's a total neat freak. she says it helps her if she can laugh at herself about it- she used to be self-conscious about it, but she realized that it only made the problem worse because it stressed her out even more. i think it helps her to talk about it too. if you open up to family and friends, just talking about it and even laughing at yourself sometimes when yet again you catch yourself doing whatever it is you do compulsively, will help relieve some of the stress, which can trigger OCD. everybody has their little quirks. so yours can be found in the APA handbook... big deal! learn to live with yourself and the way your mind works. it could be worse- you could be schizophrenic or something.

There has been some success with SSRI type antidepressants. Zyprexa was very effective but it increased the odds of getting diabetes.

I suffer from OCD too. I don't think there is a cure for it but, there are medications out there that will keep it under control. I think there are also support groups that you can go to. I don't know if there are any in your area but it would be worth checking into.

I have heard of the Surgery but the success rate is so low and you may not see a lot of relief. Its really not worth it and could have horrible risks, such as death. Sometimes medications help and sometimes they don't. I guess its easier for people to say take a pill. But I believe there is a way to get your OCD to slow down and you take control. Its called CBT (Its a type of therpry). I have been off all medications for Years now and do only CBT about two a month. I came from dropping out of college with a .20 GPA (while on medication) to a 3.67 GPA. international honor society, top 15% of my class, and planning to go to Med School (With only CBT, no medication at all). My motto of life is your just gotta deal. Deal with everything the world throws at you and try to do your best to get out of any bad situations. Surround yourself with people that will love you and support you. CBT is work, but once you have the ability to take your thoughts into your control your OCD isn't so scary. You have to work at things you want in life, you can't just sit back and wait for them to come to you. Hope this helps! There are a lot of great Psychologists out there that work with CBT. Hope you find one! Please remember if you do decide to come off medication talk to you Dr about how they feel and what they recommend. Just because I don't take them doesn't mean anything. I know the CBT has been a life changing experience. Good luck! *Edited*

I believe that for OCD you get tranquilizers to deal with the anxiety that the obsessions cause . The best therapy for it is the cognitive-behavioral theraphy.

There are not meds to cure OCD. If you have anixety related to your OCD, you can take meds for the anixety, but the OCD will still be there. There are 2 categories of OCD. 1. checkers 2. cleaners. Checkers are people who feel the need to check to make sure things are alright even though they have already checked before (locks, windows, keys are where they left them, etc) Cleaners are people who obsessively clean sometimes to the point of making themselves sick.
