High pulse rate...?
-
i checked my blood pressure/pulse rate today on one of those little wrist machines. my blood pressure wasn't too bad (about 115/78 roughly everytime) but my pulse rate was really high. the worst that i've seen in the last few hours is 116 and the lowest that i've seen has been 105. i know that is high but i'm not sure what that means. i am 27, i am 5'3", and i weigh around 160lbs. i know that i could stand to loose a few pounds but i'm not sure that has much to do with the high pulse rate. and, i don't feel like i have alot of stress in my life, i mean, no more than the average middle class single working person. my mom has thyroid problems but i always thought that you lost weight with thyroid problems and i know that i'm not loosing weight (i'm not gaining any though either). hope somebody out there can help me out. i'm planning on going to see a doctor this week if my pulse rate continues to stay high. (oh yeah, i don't take any perscription drugs either.)

Hi, okay here goes. The normal 'average' pulse is between 60 and 80 BPM in an adult, but some people are just naturally slightly above or below that. Between 105 and 106 is something I would keep an eye on, but not panic about. Go and see your GP, he will ask you a few questions about stress, test your thyroid etc. It could simply be due to stress? but I'm guessing your high pulse is simply because you are overweight. (And yes, it has a lot to do with high BP and pulse.) Very basically in laymans terms your pulse is basically your blood pumping through your veins and is dependent on how hard/fast your heart is pumping it through. If you are overweight, your heart will be forced to work much harder, therefore your pulse will be raised. My advice would to be start eating a healthy diet (not a fad or starvation diet! Just eat healthy!) And go to the gym and get some excercise done. Lose a lot more than a few pounds and then you might find your pulse gets better.

If your resting pulse rate continues to be between 105 and 116 it is a matter of a little concern. But not to worry please. As you are already planning to see your doctor you may get your thyroid functions also got checked up by evaluating the T3, T4, TSH levels etc., You may please avoid all anxiety, and try to give up the habit of self checking your own pulse.

it is possible for you to have a thyroid problem which causes way more problems that most people think. you should get checked even if your heart rate goes down. b/c your mom had problems, that could put you at more of a risk. You should also watch your caffine intake. coffee, tea, soda, energy drinks, even some pre-pakaged foods.

You may just be out of shape. Anxiety will cause your pulse to go up so check it at random times during the day. You are a little on the heavy side and that will also cause your heart to work harder. I think you will find that exercise (start slow) is the key to lowering your resting heart rate.

Your pulse rate can vary with walking, sitting, a slight scare, or a sneeze. If you feel fine and don't feel like your heart is gonna pound out of your chest, I wouldn't worry about it cause it will just make your pulse higher.
