Any tips for long distance running?

Long distance running tips?

  • I'm getting ready to ship out for basic training. My biggest issue is running far distances. Any advice or tips to make it easier?

  • Answer:

Best training for basic is to get a backpack and jog every other day--start with light weight and add weight every few times out--no need to run fast, just jog. On the off day, run without any extra weight, work yourself up to 2 miles (the fitness test is 2 miles, unless it's changed recently). I worked up to 27 miles/week, really no problems with the running part of it (should have done more situps, however).

First, Stretch. Second, hydrate. third, set small goals. Start out with one mile, when you reach that two, etc. Picture yourself running a marathon. Seriously it works. Most important, find someplace beautiful to run. Continuously running on a track or a treadmill will bore even the most seasoned runner. miles of trials and trials of miles... and don't forget to buy a good pair of running shoes- your knees and feet will thank you.

have plently of waters, powerades...etc also if possible run with a friend or boyfriend to make the time go by faster and you may enjoy it more and also have support for each other

lots of water and pace yourself that way you do not over work your body and get worn out. From now at home I would throw on some headphones and tune everything else out. That way when at Basic you can do the same and focus. Remember to breathe through your nose and out thought your mouth this help circulate the oxygen in the blood at least that is what my cross country track couch told me.

Start out slow. Take your time. If you can find a running partner, it makes things easier. If you have a watch that can count backwards, set it for a certain time period. Run out with the clock counting backwards and when it beeps, turn around and run back. That will ensure you run for as long as you want to. But I think the most important part is to not think about how far you're running. Don't worry about the distance and whether or not you're going to make it. When you get really tired, just worry about getting that next foot down. And then the next one. Stay positive. That's a big aspect of it too.
