How long does it take to tone your body? And tips for diet/exercise?

I'm at average weight for my height, i just have some unwanted fat and areas that need to be toned. I've recently changed to eating healthier foods and everyday I go on the elliptical for an hour in the day time and burn 700+ calories. I also usually take a 1-2 hour long walk at night. I used to never exercise and I used to have pretty unhealthy eating habits.How long will it take before I start seeing results? Also, any tips on exercises and foods to help me lose weight and tone up would be appretiated.
