Every game show people win prizes. Whenever you win a prize, you pay taxes on it. It's not a tax to the show, its income tax.

Yes, any time you win something valued over a certain dollar amount, you have to pay federal and state taxes on it. That's why much of the time, people don't actually take the prizes they just won. After the show, winners are usually offered a flat cash amount instead of all their prizes. Of course the cash is nowhere near the retail value of the prizes... sometimes it's barely half, but having $20K in cash is better then having a $40K car with an $8K tax bill that you can't afford to pay.
