What exactly is tapioca?

I was eating tapioca pudding and this thought crossed my mind... What is tapioca?
-
Answer:
Tapioca is basically a root starch derived from the cassava, or yuca plant. It's often used to thicken soups and sweeten the flavor of baked goods, and it makes a dandy pudding. It's actually rather weird to figure how it ever came to be. Good question. :)
