How do I open a coconut?

I find the best (and most fun way) is to put it into a plastic supermarket bag and 'swing it' against a concrete slab in your backyard.

First take a screwdriver and poke a hole through two of the eyes in the end of the coconut, the dark brown spots on the end. carefully pour the juice from the nut, you can drink this, then place the coconut on a very hard surface like the sidewalk wrap it in a towel and smack it several times with a hammer to crack it open. then remove the meat with a knife but be careful don't slip with the knife. or some folks heat them in the oven until they pop open but I have never tried this so cant tell you how to do it. enjoy your coconut.

Trick is to tap it with a hammer all the way around the coconut until it cracks. Catch the juice in a bowl and then fininsh cracking open the coconut. Open it is open put it into an oven at 350 for ten to fifteen minutesthis cause the the meat to shrink and pull away from the shell. If you want it toasted Cut the meat into shavings and toast in a fring pan.

C4... and lots of it. gives the coconut a spicy flavor :P

Well it really depends. Do you have a young coconut? Or is it one that is hard and brown on the outside? If it is hard and brown on the outside then any of the above suggestions would work fine. If it is a young coconut, you can simply peel it and cut off the top portion to get the juices and flesh out.

Well, when we had a coconut, which was a long time ago, we first took a drill to get the fluids out, then we sawed it open, for the meat.

wel, you can hit it with a rock.... just kiding, my dad has a drill that is used especially for that purpose (opening a coconut)... he even keeps it in the kitchen.

blunt force, crack it with the back end of a strong knife all the way around in a circle and it should pop, over the sink

I used a hammer and a chisel! Sounds funny but it works!
