It's because teachers can't paddle students any more. Put a little discipline back in the classroom and a lot of stuff will improve. Also, Principals need to have a little backbone when dealing with whinny parents. Maybe they could paddle the parents?

Because teaching methods have altered with more time spent on the well being of the child and less consideration of the subject matter. Paperwork and bureaucracy have got in the way of a decent education with schools more interested in league tables and teachers worrying to much about the impact of an ofsted inspection

I've a friend who is a teacher, of juniors, 5-11 year olds, and every week he has to listen to parents moaning and bullying him, because their spoilt brats of children were told to do stuff by him.....like what teachers are supposed to do. Also, he can't be on his own with a student, either to reprimand them or to give advice, in case there is a claim of sexual harassment. there are so many super sensitive rules and regulations, that even if a child fell during PE he has to get a female teacher to help up a little girl. I personally could not up up with the hassle, we will have virtual classrooms soon, with virtual teachers as we will have forbidden any sort of contact /communication with children. What type of world will we live in then. And the other side is the parents who send their children into to school to learn manners and how to behave, because they are too lazy themselves to do it. Too much politics, and too little reality and money. That's why teaching is a dying professions....and that's just the younger kids, I didn't even get to rant about the teen agers .......

I read the National Education Association magazines, and the #1 reason given is usually that many find that they are not supported well by the school administration when a conflict arises. Many teachers get over the discipline issue early on as they discover methods to avoid the situation escalating to verbal abuse. I personally, spend a few days in the first days of class giving the rules, procedures and consequences in a no-nonsense manner. I spend the rest of the year executing my consequences and rewards in a consistent manner so there is no tolerance for verbal abuse. If someone even considers it, they know that their parents will find out a few hours later and that they will have a writing assignment to do. I have never worked in an inner-city district, however, and I have heard seasoned teachers complain about lack of teacher respect there. I don't have any advice for that. Teaching is stressful. But it is also one of the most rewarding jobs too. If the stress overpowers the reward for you, for your health consider the career change. Sometimes changing school districts is a solution.

Why? -low pay -lots of stress -decreasing respect -lack of available discipline -lots of work to do at home -too many difficult students who refuse to behave -parents who support the misbehavior & lack of effort of their kids -more time spent dealing with discipline issues than teaching -not much feeling of actually working in your field -too much time spent thinking you could do more with your degree -being blamed for failing students who choose to not do the work -watching spouse work for more money with less stress

Social and cultural ideas. I work in a tertiary 6th Form. The students now have a different mindset to - say - 6 years ago. They can't see the sense in completing homework assignments as it interferes with their social lives. Similarly, now - in tertiary eduacation at least - the managers expect to run a college like a business. They can't see that if some students complete an A level with a grade E (minimum pass) it may be a personal achievement for that particular student. Managers want (because of the Goverment) high grades. Most students who attend 6th form are well behaved, so the threat of physical and verbal abuse isn't a problem. It's the teaching methods. Up until about 6 years ago, OFSTEAD had two sets of criteria: one for schools and another for Further Education. The FE sector wasn't judged by the same criteria - it was more focused on preparing students for university study - lectures/seminar approaches. However, the focus has changed. FE colleges are now expected to use the same techniques as schools: changing teaching strategies every 20 minutes etc. This doesn't work. Similarly, the focus for lecturers is now on completing paperwork which shows the whole college in a 'good/excellent' light according to OFSTEAD. Everyone in my area of work (Humanties, English. Languages and Law) - and our top managers are so out of touch that they haven't realised that our acronym is HELL - have so much paper work to do that they can't deal with the grass roots business of actually teaching to the syllabus. We are so busy making sure that our college looks good on paper that the actual 'teaching' elements for the subject goes out of the window. I've decided that if there is any target setting to be done, then I'm the one who is going to decide on the targets to be set, so I'm leaving the profession - one which I love. I'll miss the contact with the students and the professionals I work with, but not the fact that ticking boxes to make the college look good on paper infringes on my ability to pass on the love that I have for my subject. Students are being short-changed for paper based exercises in my opinion. Hope this helps.

Teaching is always a great profession, the problem in some countries is the remuneration paid to them will not attract good people for that job. Few will be taking up teacher jobs irrespective of remuneration because they love that job. Due to this the schools graded best to worst thru out the world. If the people discard these bad institutions is the remedy for correction. This profession makes a country advance or fail. Contributes generating talented pools to take nations forward.

Whereas those 2 things may be true, the fact is it is the PAY they recieve. Now, I am speaking from an American point of view. If you have "classroom management" and the consequences of the student's actions ARE effective, people will learn quickly. However, no one in their right mind would be do it and be underpaid. Teaching methods change because of the way kids learn. that's a given. they will change from year to year.

Who says it is? Applications to GTP course I help on were 160 for 20 places this year. Admittedly, 80 applicants were nowhere near good enough to be considered.
