Why Are You Going To College?

Why is college so expensive to begin with, I mean where is all that money going to?

  • Every student in the US that attends college pays tuition, thousands and thousands of dollars. So okay, why is it even that expensive to begin with? And it keeps getting higher and higher as time goes on. So alright, most if not all colleges are in it for the money right? It's become a business for them to make lots of profit. So why do we still attend college, cause we know we need it to get a good career, the colleges know this and take advantage of us students, taking our money without hesitation. The government shouldn't even worry about giving out grants (financial aid), if college wasn't so expensive to begin with. So how do you feel, knowing that you're attending a college that's just in it for your money and can care less if you struggle or drop out (free money for them since you're not finishing college). A college where you attend after paying tuition, still having to pay for parking permit, food courts that charge students to eat, bookstores that sell expensive books Or what about professors that make students go to class by making attendance and participation part of their GRADE, I mean come on, we paid for these classes and now we can't decide whether we want to attend class or not. Our tuition is the professor's salaries, and they want to screw us over with attendance, why? I know we don't have to attend class, but when attendance is part of the percentage of the overall grade, a student wanting an A or something is basically forced to go. Sort of pathetic to see some professors making students come to class just cause the professors don't want to come to class with a small group of people (maybe it's because your class sucks and it's boring). Okay, I just had to get that out of my system. Those professors can suck on it. Back to the issue, where is all that tuition money going to? With the way it's going now, I think it's best if we never attend college and just work our way up the old fashion way. No student loan debt to worry about, and in some cases WORK EXPERIENCE is much more important than some of piece of paper. Some friends of mine never had debt before until they were in college, should of just stayed away. Just because it's a school doesn't mean that it's a good place to be at. It's not like Elementary, Middle, High School (Not Private Schools) where it's free to attend, but College is. Kind of ironic, as kids most of us never wanted to go to school and it was free, but as adults we need school (college) but it going to cost us. College are schools that demand money for education, and where there's money there's always greedy and selfish people. Education is suppose to be a good thing, but these college institution has made it something quite evil and despicable.

Wow, that was almost a dissertation on the issues regarding America's education system! I agree with you to a point, and that is that education is too expensive, but I understand that it has to cost money to gain an education. Most of that money goes to keeping the school running, like salaries, services (there are many), and utilities. We are just used to a subsidized secondary education. If you attend a private school, it costs almost as much as college. Believe it or not, you cost a lot of money. I read somewhere that the average school system spends around 20,000 dollars per student per year! Even public universities cost money because the state contributes only so much money. The out of state tuition is what you would have to pay if the state were not subsidizing your education. In summation, the US has some of the best learning institutions in the world, but unfortunately we must be willing to pay for it. Good Question...that was fun!

Actually, a lot of your professors are adjuncts, and they are getting paid a lot less than the average wage for a professional in the U.S. They often teach 5-6 large course per semester, sometimes at more than one university, and they aren't given health insurance. You wanna know where your tuition money is really going? It's going into expensive university real estate projects (fancy new buildings that cost millions of dollars, that the university president decided to build because he/she was buddies with a developer). Sometimes, your money is also going into support for high end college sports teams that aren't being well-managed. A sports team can bring a lot of money into the college, or it could cost a lot too.
