Do pastry chefs make good money in the US?

I get paid minumum wage as a waitress but the owners who are the chefs get a share of tips?

  • i cannot express how hard me and the gilrs that i work with, actually work just belive me when i say we work bloody hard. we are given the minimum break legal and the minimum wage legal. We work all day and clean the place after we close, despite that, the owners who are also the chefs that are quite obviously make alot of money from the business ( they frequently talk about their expensive cars and other spends) take their fair share of the daily tips. Despite the fact that they are the chefs, they make alot of money and even though its all legal, is it fair that they take tips away from us when they only pay us minimum pay when they clearly flaunt their own money??? when you give a tip surely it is because of the good service as you are paying for whatever quality food you are having? you dont pay to sit down and be waited upon? the price is next to the food not on waiters foreheads??? i think it is fair enough to give a tip and it go to the chefs but or pay surely should reflect how hard we work? i love work because of the girls i am with and another thing is that they are encredibly horrible to people who leave, there are people who have left to uni and are still expected to come back when they are on holidays.

  • Answer:

you are getting tipped on your service, not the food. the chefs at all the restaurants i've ever worked at get paid very well and do not get tipped out. the only people you should be sharing your tips with are the bussers, food runners, bartender and sometimes the hostess. i can't believe how greedy your chef/owners are. i would try to find a new job and maybe call your local news station to spread the word on their practice. maybe, they will be so embarrassed, they will change their policy.

It's not fair at all. Look at it this way, do the chef/owners give the waitstaff and bussers a share of the daily restaurant income? Quit and find another place. And complain vociferously.

they are stealing from you. the tip goes to the servers some money should go to bus boys and dishwashers. the cooks do not get tipped.

I owned a restaurant for many years and I was the Chef. I would never expect to be tipped by the employees.....ever. As a matter of fact , the owner/Chef would not have a business if it were not for the wait staff. They should be tipping you!!!! It IS easier said than done but if you all complained at once , they might change that " tip the owners rule", of theirs. Even if the food is gourmet quality, customers will not come back if the waitstaff is no good. People come in for the smiling faces and kind wait people, more than the food. Listen-up owners, If you treat your employees like crap you will lose your business.

Sorry, honey, that is definitly NOT fair. I would NOT be able to tolerate it.

In some states it is illegal for owners to share tips. Check with your state employment department.

No the owners should def not be tipped out. All of you should complain and possibly find new jobs

Some states do not pay even a minimum wage for servers so their tip is a crucial part of their pay. Google something like "how much does a waitress earn" and you can get an idea if servers in your area are getting what you are paid, If it looks like you are getting less, maybe it is time to switch jobs. I know that that is easier said than done, but you should start looking while you are still working. I have known employees that are willing to accept things like your situation because their bosses are especially flexible when it come to being late, asking for days off, sickness, etc. What about other benefits such as vacation an sick leave? Consider everything before you throw in the towel!

Congratulations - you have one of the MILLIONS of very difficult jobs that gets paid minimum wage. Taking it out on the kitchen staff doesn't help. You answered your own question when you said "quality food." If the kitchen starts messing up orders and takes forever to get food out to you - then see how many tips you got. It is a team effort - they should participate in the tips. If you don't like how much you get paid - you get another job. Very few jobs allow you to whine to your customers in order to get a raise.
