What can I say to a restaurant manager to get an interview?

Was I treated equally during interview process at BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse?

  • Long but worth the read!! I applied at BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse and not only do I feel like I never had a fair chance (for some personal reason it seems like), they were extremely rude, and their general manager lied straight to my face. I had a interview with a regular manager 2 thursdays ago. She said she liked me, and that she would pass me on to the General Manager on monday. On monday, I had a perfect interview with their General Manager. He said he liked me too basically, and that everything would be a Green light if my references checked out. He told me to come up to the restaurant by thursday if i hadnt heard anything. I went on thursday and he told me oh, i didnt get enough time to call your references yet, come back tomorrow (friday, which was yesterday) So I go up there yesterday, and he tells me ----- you dont have the job, your references "didnt check out" . Automatically a red flag went up in my head. My personal references would NEVER say one bad word about me. All 3 of my references were from my last restaurant, And all 3 of those managers, including the GM of the last restaurant said they would give me a excellent recomendation. I even brought a letter of recomendation from one of my references, but it "didnt check out" ???? HAHAHAHAHAHA. I knew going into BJ's exactly what each reference would say about me, cuz i spoke to them ahead of time about it. I told BJ's General Manager that was very confusing and weird. He was basically like oh im really sorry, but I cant do nothing for you. So.... Im bout to just go home and forget about the whole thing, its not the end of the world. But then my brain goes.... Hey man, something is extremely fishy here. It smells like im on a sea port here. So I bust a U-turn and drive straight back to my old restaurant which happens to be only minutes away :) The manager of BJ's told me on thursday to come back on friday cuz he didnt have enough time to call my references. So that means there was a extremely short period of time where he couldve "called" my references. So I go back to my old restaurant, track down ALL the managers. AND GUESS WHAT THEY TELL ME. BJ'S NEVER EVEN CALLED US TO ASK ABOUT YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HAHAHAHA So I hop in my car, drive str8 back to BJ's and ask for their GM again. I wasnt rude. I said Hey man, I can handle not getting a job, but I dont like being lied to like that, I just went back to my old restaurant and they said yall NEVER EVEN called to check up on me. It's ok if you dont wanna hire me, I cant force you, just tell me what the REAL reason is. And this motha****** just walks off on me, back into the kitchen, and never comes out again. Again...this is the GENERAL MANAGER of this place, and that location is one of , if not THE, busiest restaurants in Houston. Long story short, the man should have some manners, and a sense of how to conduct business. I wanted to knock his head off on the spot when he walked off on me. So...long story short, they led me on for a entire week, lied to me, disrespected me, and never gave me a LEGIT reason why I couldnt work there. The funny thing is, Texas is the one state where he could ve just been like nah, i dont want you, nah i dont like you, nah you wont fit in here, and I couldnt have said a word. He could ve even said i dont like the way you dress, sorry, get out of here. And all i could've done was suck on it. But with what he did, lying to my face and me proving it, on top of how me acted when i politely asked him to clarify, he opened himself to me going to the EEOC, reporting this, and filing a lawsuit for not getting a equal chance to land the job. I've been told to do so by my friends, and by one of my references actually haha. So what do you guys think about this situation? Im sorry for typing so much Extra Details on Me that could be a factor. 1. Im white, 24 years old. 2. 2 + years in the field with experience and great references 3. Available 24/7/365...and i do mean that unlike a lot who say that 4. No criminal convictions EVER 5. Even have 2 years engineering completed at a very good university, even though im a full-time waiter. Just wanna know why Im not good enough to serve food, and what I did to deserve to be treated like that??? I think its lawyer time!!!

  • Answer:

you obviously don't know what discrimination is and is NOT: perhaps you should learn that first see: http://www.eeoc.gov an employer can hire or not hire for any reason or NO reason at all (except discrimination), and the employer does NOT have to tell you what their reason is... your references did NOT check out, that is the TRUTH, it may be because the GM never checked them but that is IRRELEVANT as far as the law is concerned... and your attitude is relevant, if this question/rant is an example of how you deal with issues and how you react when questioned it seems that this GM made a great decision in NOT hiring you....... you need to grow up, learn what is and is NOT discrimination, learn what an EEO employer is, and not attack everyone who tries to explain the law to you ...... what you have heard from friends is wrong you have NO case against this employer and any competent attorney will tell you that.... actually they should tell you that there is NOTHING they can do until you file a claim with the EEOC..... the EEOC will tell you that you do NOT have any claim........ EDIT: sorry i forgot to answer the question of; "Was I treated equally during interview process at BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse?" i can't say yes or no BUT the law does NOT require that you be treated equally, all the law requires is that the SOLE reason for an employment decision is NOT based on discriminatory criteria...... NOTHING you have here is even close to being discriminatory.....

If you write this much (I couldn't bring myself to read the whole thing) for people you don't know, I can imagine what you are like in real life. Obsessive-compulsive? Rather than a lawyer, you might try an analyst.

Tell all your Friends how bad they treated you. they'll tell some friends and word of this incident will spread, and BJ's might just loose some Business. lawsuits take a while to jam through the legal system, so i don't recommend it. there are better ways to get back.

Why don't you write to Head Office and tell them the whole story as you have here. At least they should respond. I think you deserve a job for perseverance and keeping your temper. I'd employ you but I'm not in Texas.

If the GM is shorter than you are (and uglier) I'd say he has short man syndrome...

It sounds like the head honcho of BJs is an utter Douchebag. You don't want to work for them anyways. How you were treated was not fair at all, but if you want to get back at them, tell EVERYBODY what you don't like about that place. As they say, "one person saying something bad about a business is as powerful and 10 people saying something good". If I'm ever in Houston, you can bet I won't be eating there!
