What makes a better amplifier?

My guitar amplifier makes a weird noise when i turn it off?

  • i have a JCM 900 50watt marshall halfstack and always let it warm up before i play it but lately its been making this static-like crackling sound when i turn off the standby switch. it only lasts like 5 seconds and then dies off. it also makes random static noises when im playing it but i only notice when i stop playing. i think it might just be old tubes. my old man passed it down to me 6 months back and i never recalled him replacing the tubes. but i want someone elses perspective just to make sure

Michael, although it may very well be the tubes, it could also be the potentiometers. When unused for a period of time, control pots get contaminants on the wiping surfaces which need to be removed. Try rotating every one of the controls rapidly through the entire range of motion to see if you can disturb any surface deposits. If this helps but does not completely cure the problem, you may need to expose the components, and spray contact cleaner directly into the interior of the potentiometers. If you are not knowledgeable regarding tube amplifiers, I would advise against taking this second step yourself, as there are hazardous voltages present inside even when no power is connected. Best regards, Dana

Breakfast cereal noises are usually down to dirty tube base contacts. Removing each of the tubes and cleaning the pins with some switch cleaner (use a cotton bud) and re-seating the tubes in their sockets should help. It wouldn't hurt to give the input jack socket a squirt of switch cleaner as well.

tubes should be replaced in a guitar amplifier every few years or so, even if there isnt a problem they should still be replaced cause of aging, idk, try replacing them it should solve your problem
