WHat is the different between available balance and current balance?

My current balance is less then my Available balance?

  • I use Rockland Trust and I put money in my account and it says Example: Current Balance 123.32 Available Balance 213.00 now if my Available balance is higher than my current does that mean i can make debit purchases with it but i cant withdraw it or can i just use my current balance? Confused i just need to know so that i don't go out and buy something that may be a dollar over my current and have the awkwardness of being declined due to insufficient funds.

  • Answer:

Current Balance is the balance of your bank account at the end of each night's processing. So if you have $123.13 as the current balance, that means that's how much money was in your bank account last night after all items processed. Your current balance will NEVER change throughout the day, and will only change with each nights processing! Your available balance is basically your current balance PLUS OR MINUS any pending deposits or charges. If your available balance is more than your current, it means you have a pending deposit. Your AVAILABLE BALANCE is just that... available. That's how much money you have to use. Obviously checks that you have written wouldn't show up. That's where keeping up with your check register comes into play. Always always go by available balance. And when in doubt, call your banks customer service! They can better explain.

Your available balance is how much you have in the bank. That does not include pending charges. Your Current Balance is how much you have in the bank AFTER all of your charges are processed. Say you had 213.00 at one point, but then you went to the mall and spent 89.68, but their system has not yet taken the money from your account. It still charged itself to your account, so your new current balance is 123.32. Their system still hasn't taken the money physically, though, so your account still physically has the 213.00 but only until their system's process the transaction. Do not spend over your current balance or after everything is processed you will be overdrawn.

There is likely a pending transaction making your Avail Bal more than Current Bal. For security, do not spend more than your current bal.
