Disability for back surgery?

I am having back surgery and need disability insurance?

  • I am trying to get my finances & my job straight before I go through with my back surgery that will have me off work for at least 3 - 7 months. I was wondering if someone knows about any disability insurance that would cover me? I have talked to two companies and both say its a pre-existing condition and they will not cover me. Any sugestions?

  • Answer:

~~Once you have been diagnosed with something, there are no insurance companies that I know of that will pay you disability payments. Disability insurance needs be purchased while a person is completely healthy.~~

Any such private coverage will exclude preexisting conditions. Are you covered by STATE temporary disability?

Of course they won't cover you. You cannot expect insurance to cover your costs AFTER you've encountered the situation which requires your back surgery. The time to have procured such insurance was BEFORE you had any issues. You will NOT find insurance coverage to help this situation. Sorry.

Don't bother. It's too late to buy disability insurance, once you already KNOW you're going to be taking time off. You can't buy a lottery ticket today, for yesterday's drawing. All that money you've saved over the years by NOT carrying disability insurance - that's what you use to get you through. You can't buy house insurance once your house is on fire, and you can't buy disability insurance to cover a preexisting condition. You have to buy insurance when you DON'T need it. Once you need it, it's too late. That means, feel free to buy disability coverage now, but don't expect coverage now. But the NEXT time you need to take some time off due to an injury or illness, you'll have coverage. If you don't buy it, then you STILL won't have coverage NEXT time you need it.

It's not called "insurance" if you can get it after you need it, it is then called "welfare". Google "medicaid + your state" and talk with a case worker to see if you qualify. Insurance will not cover pre-existing conditions.

Your chances of getting coverage are slim, but not zero as others suggest. If you work in a state has mandatory short term disability you might already have some level of coverage. Those states are CA, HI, NJ, NY, and RI. Social Security Disability will not cover something that lasts less than one year. You might be able to get short term disability coverage, but there will be a pre-existing condition clause. Some policies will cover a pre existing condition if the claim occurs after you have been in the policy for one year - if you qualify for coverage. You would have to answer medical questions to qualify for coverage. You might slip by underwriting if your back condition is not acute. You might be able to collect a benefit if you can wait one year for your surgery.

If you are employed and you have to be off work for a while you should file for state disability benefits. Your doctor would sign the paperwork for you to be off work for a specified time. You file the paperwork with the state. When you mention pre-existing condition that applies to getting new health insurance. That has nothng to do with disability benefits. You might have to join your state high risk insurance pool since your company is not offering health benefits.

Any disability insurance that you already had before you needed surgery might cover this. You cannot get disability insurance now to cover this if you do not already have the insurance. You might qualify for disability benefits from the government.
