Would I be able to collect disability from herniated disc surgery and hip replacement?
-
I had my left hip replaced in Sept of 2009 and just recently I had back surgery to repair a herniated disc in my back lower lumbar L4 L5, My left leg is longer then my right and it is causing problems with my back. Could I collect disability in order to be able to survive on my own?

Answer:
Do you HAVE disability insurance? If you don't have disability coverage in place BEFORE you become disabled, there's nothing to collect. If you're talking about social security disability, you must be TOTALLY, permanently disabled, unable to work ANY job. You also must have worked and paid in to the system, at least ten years. And the payment you get out, is based on how much you've paid in. With only ten years working in, you will NOT get enough to survive on.

no need -there are plenty of jobs you can do without causing further damage. talk to a Voc Rehab counselor, return to school & complete your degree, and see a therapist to deal with your negative thoughts.

It would be highly unlikely that your hip replacement would leave you disabled. In fact you would be more likely to get back on your feet once the hip is repaired. For a leg length discrepancy, you need to investigate adding a lift to the shoe of your shorter leg. If the difference is less than .5-1.0" you might be able to get away with using an insert inside the shoe. For differences greater than .5-1.0" it's better to build up the shoe on the outside. In any case, there are ways to cope with a leg length difference. To investigate social security disability eligibility, visit http://www.ssa.gov/pgm/disability.htm
