I am out of work due to surgery, but my employers don't carry disability insurance. What are my options?

Employers aren't required to carry disability insurance. If no one BOUGHT the coverage for you, and you didn't buy it either, you don't have it. You can't buy it AFTER you need it. Most prudent people, though, have an emergency fund, to cover things like this. It's too late to get someone else to pay you. **Only six states have a mandatory state disability program. Obviously, you don't live in one of those states.**

To ask your family or church for money. Social Security disability takes more than a year to get. Your boss should have provided supplemental coverage. It wouldn't have even cost them anything to do so. He should have called AFLAC....or even better he should have called Colonial Life (which is bigger and cheaper likely since they don't advertise as much). And, I think what Flower meant to say is that YOU SHOULD HAVE HAD a private plan. It's too late to buy one now.

There is not "a service". Most states have their own, government-run, short-term disability program. Apply for disability benefits from your state government, not from "a service".
