What is the best way to build credit?

  • I am in my late 20s and I have a credit score of 633. I closed all of my credit cards (3 of them) 5 years ago and I do not currently have any lines of credit open. I can't get approved for small loans or credit cards anywhere that I have looked into (wells fargo, B of A, Chase) because I do not have any existing line of credit. I got a prepaid credit card to build credit but the service rep told me that they do not report anything to the credit bureau therefore the use of the prepaid credit card does not build credit. Does anyone know of a way to build credit so I can eventually get a credit card somewhere and increase my credit score? Thanks

    First - you CAN get a CC, but you'll need someone to cosign it for you. This is the best way to build your credit. Just make sure you're never late on a payment, and keep below 50% utilization, or better - below 35%. Another good way is to take a secured loan. Credit union often offers pledge loans. Deposit $200 or $300, take a secured loan (freeze those $200/$300) and pay $10/$20 each months. This should build your credit, and after 6 month or a year they will also approve you for a low-limit unsecured credit card, and that will be very good for your credit. Good luck.

Why the hell did you close your credit cards? 633 isn't a BAD score, but now it's worthless because your credit history will be very short, if you do get approved for a card. Your only option is either a Chase or Capital One SECURED credit card, OR if a bank/credit union near you offers secured loans. You will have to put $300-500 in an account, and borrow from it, then pay it back. Within about 6 months, you should be able to switch to a unsecured card.

Building credit takes time. Since you cannot legally enter into a contract until age 18 in America, it is difficult to start building credit until you turn 18. Credit cards are generally very easy for young people to acquire while they are in college, and if used responsibly can be an excellent way to begin building solid credit. Keeping your oldest accounts open and in good standing is important, so unless you are worried about identity theft or have another excellent reason for closing old accounts, keep them open so they continue to contribute to your credit score. Open a credit Union Account, after time request a credit card, with your score you should have no problem getting a credit line, A 633 credit score could mean higher interest rates and higher payments.If you pay on time and continue to do so for years, this will lay a solid credit foundation. One thing you do have to keep in mind is that this goes beyond just paying your credit card, mortgage, or car loans on time. Even things such as utility bills, cell phone, rent, and so on will likely be reported if late. While these types of accounts don’t generally show up on your credit report if you’re in good standing, they usually will still show up as a blemish if you’re late (usually after 30 days late). Many people apply for a retailer of a department store credit card. Most report to the credit bureaus. When I started, I'v applied for Macy's CC because the report to all the 3 major credit bureaus. if you don't have a Macy's where you live go for what ever big retailer that's near you.
