How hard is it to be a debt collector?

How would you prank an incoming call from a debt collector?

  • I get calls from debt collectors harrassing me for debts, sometimes they are real, and I will work things out, but plenty of times they are not. They are not mine or I paid the company and the debt collector still feels I owe them. In any case, I want to see how you would prank an incoming call from a debt collector. If they are calling me, then it is not harrassment, because they are literally asking for it. Some of the less creative ideas I have already received are to cuss at 'em ( come on, everyone does that), heavy breathing on the phone, talk like you are retarded (drunk, stoned, sleep deprived, whatever), or pretend you don't speak english. That last one sounded funnier when you consider switching foreign languages at random, even if you don't know what you are saying "Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto". Think of whatever you can, and let me know. I think if ppl come up with a bunch of things that take up their time, don't let them control the conversation, and overall make the whole business model of harrassing people cost more money than it is worth, people will get less of these calls, and these so called "collection agencies" will hopefully go out of business. 15 - 20 seconds of a phone ringing that goes unanswered can mean an attempt to contact over 100 people an hour, plus a machine can call thousands an hour. 5 minutes or more of wasting an agents time means only talking to 12 people an hour. any company looking at that much time on the phone and no money coming in will not be able continue their extortionist practices. And maybe we can make it fun >:)

  • Answer:

My cell kept getting calls from debt collectors for some guy named Andre who apparently owes a lot of money - up to 4-6 calls a day, starting at 5am and continuing until midnight. I guess he had the number before me, even though I've had the number for 2 years. I told them every time they called that I don't know an Andre and given them the number of my phone provider to confirm this number has not belonged to an Andre for more than 2 years. Their number came in as unknown so I couldn't track them and they never give their company name, they just hang up when I ask who is calling. This went on for almost 2 months, no matter who I told they wouldn't remove me from the list. I never got angry with them or swore at them, I just said that there was no Andre at my number and to stop calling So for a few days, everytime someone called for Andre I started crying saying that he had been killed in an accident over the weekend and after 3 days they stopped calling and never called again.

My favorite prank is that I speak German to them. It would be even funner for you to INVENT a language and pretend like you do not understand what they are saying. LOADS of fun.

answer "maybe" to everything they ask, sometimes they catch on quickly, but others take awhile to figure out whats going on.i also try and get their office number(caller i.d or google the company name) and i call them back and tell them i have the wrong number...over and over. never agree to anything though...never. making up your own slang is funny to,when they ask what you mean, answer with more made up slang. have fun.

The absolutely funniest one I have ever heard was from Tom Mabe where he took a telemarketer call and pretended to be a police detective investigation a murder. He puts the caller through the 3rd degree with a series of questions...it's hilarious. Here's a link to the text but it's all over utube etc if you search for Bob and Tom. http://www.entertonement.com/clips/qlztssnyzk--Telemarketer-Calls-Murder-SceneRadio-Telemarketers-The-Bob-Tom-Radio-Show-phone-call-

I'd grow up instead.

Yeah, they're definitely asking for it by just doing their job. All you're doing is just wasting their time, ruining their day, and getting them fired so they're out of the job. It's not their problem you've handled your money poorly.

Juvenile behavior but then again not surprising. If you owe then make arrangements If you do not owe tell them to get lost

It might be easier to just change your phone number. I can't really think of any other ways! LOL

First of all, as a debt collector, I have to say this is rather childish and does not get the results you want. You see, if you act a fool or cuss at us or follow some of the other stupid things listed here, that will just keep your number in the rotation because we know it pisses you off when we call. You want to ruin our day? Guess what? We have, on average, several hundred people calling all day. We can annoy you a lot more than you can annoy us. If the call is a wrong number, act like an adult & say so. If it doesn't get removed from the system within a week (some systems update immediately, some overnight & some only weekly so you have to give us a bit of time, especially with an automated dialer) then the next call you get calmly request a supervisor. Explain to the supervisor that this is an incorrect number & you would appreciate it being removed. Again, calmly. I have known more supervisors who, after being cussed out by an irate customer, would not only put the number back in rotation but would replace other numbers with this number because of the attitude. Most systems have room for 5-10 numbers per account so that we can skip trace (track down) the debtor using multiple numbers. So, keep it calm and adult & you can stop the annoying calls. Also, a good way to avoid this issue is to get an unlisted number. Secondly, if I see a debt collector calling, I will revert back to my pizza shop days & act like they are calling in for a pizza. It can really screw with their heads. I know, I suggested being adult & explaining why most tricks don't work & then gave one. Hey, I am only human, even if I am a debt collector. Sometimes it is just fun to jerk someone's chain.
