My bank account is being levied. What can I do?

  • I live in California and I bank with Bank of America. My account is being levied for about $4000 by a creditor. I have direct deposit and will not have access to any of the money until it's paid off. I have automatic monthly withdrawals from that account to pay for bills and can't afford to lose my entire paycheck every time I get paid. Can I cancel my direct deposit for now and if I do, can they and will they garnish from my wages? How long will it take? I'm really stressed out, please help.

  • Answer:

Cancel direct deposit ASAP. Yes, they can garnish your wages but it will be for a lot less money - they can only take a certain percentage (which varies by state). This is why you don't ignore notifcations that you're being sued.
