Why is my transmission overheating?

Transmission overheating?

  • what can cause a trans mission to over heat but not an engine? my engine temp is fine but my transmission has been overheating and now i need a new one, so how did this happen?

  • Answer:

Fluid breakdown is the major reason for transmission failure. Not changing fluid at manufacture intervals can cause the fluid to breakdown and lose its lubrication properties creating heat. The heat damages bearings, gears, and friction materials. Another possibility is a clogged transmission cooler which does not allow the fluid to cool. The heat again kills the transmission. A clogged transmission cooler may be the result of or the cause of a failed transmission. In other words, a clogged cooler can cause a transmission failure, and a failed transmission can cause a clogged transmission cooler. If you are repairing or replacing the transmision make sure the shop either flushes the cooler or preferablely replaces the transmission cooler(which is unfortunately usually part of the radiator).

If you haven't been towing heavy loads, climbing steep mountains, or letting the fluid get too low, maybe the transmission cooler is bad, or something in the transmission is worn out.
