How to rebuild an Air cooled VW motor?

I am new to the air cooled motor of Volkswagen Beetles and how it should be taken care of, and what not to do?

  • I just bought a 73 vw beetle with a 1600cc flat-4, it has dual port heads, and a dual port intake(is this stock?) with a webber 2 barrel I believe. It has headers, and no muffler, just some motor cycle lookin thing comin off the headers that says stinger. Got alot of pep for a BUG. I live in north texas, and it is 105 here most of the day in the summer. How should I make sure it doesnt over heat while at a stop light? How often should I add oil and what is the safest LOW limit incase im stuck somewhere without any extra oil. (yes i know always keep extra under the hood) How many miles does the average well maintained beetle engine go to? Any advice on anything beetle wise would be appreciated. Thanks for your time, and in advance for the answers people!
