Is my GPA public or private information?

Is gpa public information?

  • I know that certain things like enrollment status and degree awarded, major, etc are "public information" that universities can verify but are they allowed to verify things such as GPA without a signature from me specifically? I was never sent a form by the insurance company to sign and send to my school but I did send them my transcript. Are they legally allowed to ask my college for verification for GPA or am I protected under the Privacy Act law (or whatever that's called)? If not then how do employers/insurance companies make sure you're not lying?

  • Answer:

Usually insurance companies and employers trust you until they have to pay out or sack you. Somewhere in all the forms you have to sign will be a clause like 'I authorise company X to obtain my grade point average from all educational establishments that I have attended" and then they make the enquires.
