Insurance for a new driver in Ontario?

Is my son covered on my Ontario, Canada insurance if he lives at home and isn't added as an occasional driver?

  • My son had a 'not at fault' accident recently and we never added him on our insurance policy as an occasional driver. Will he be covered? We also didn't have collision on the car (only liability) but we were told by the Collision Reporting Centre rep that in the case of 'not at fault' accidents, insurance will usually cover the damage and go after the other driver but that would only apply if they'll cover us at all if they say that we should have added him when he got his licence. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

  • Answer:

The guy at the Collision Reporting Centre's opinion isn't worth two cents. He's there to take reports on accidents, they are not an insurance expert. By not adding your son as an occasional driver you have given the insurer grounds to deny the claim. All drivers in the household and all regular operators of the vehicle must be reported to the insurer. All you can do know is report the accident to your insurer and see what they do, as I cannot guarantee they will deny the claim. However to avoid this uncertainty in the future you should contact your broker/agent and add your son to the policy.
