What's the cheapest car to insure?

Cheapest car to insure for new driver aged 17?

  • I looked for a quote on a 1994 renault clio 1.4 RT, which came up as £1059 per year, and also for one of the older eary 90's golfs, which was even higher at over £2000, for a 17yr old driver. I then looked at a 1.4l vauxhall corsa, 1993, which was still at least £1000 to insure. yet my friend managed to get insurance on her own policy for the same 1.4l corsa, at around £700 a year, and she had only been driving an additional 2 months more than me. and thats on the same insurance company too. Whats one of the cheapest cars possible to insure (within reason, preferably a half decent car haha) now, so i can see what my cheapest quote could be?

  • Answer:

If you can afford it, you might be better to get a slightly newer car. Surprisingly they are quite often cheaper to insure than older cars. Try using something like http://www.confused.com and keep trying different cars. Good luck ;o)

Marks and spencers are apparently very reasonable! Quotes differ from postcodes aswel, when i was at college we messed about on confused.com same drive details, same car, diffrent postcode. There was bout £750 diffrence between the lowest price and the top price!

I see you're looking at older cars, so the only suggestions I have would be things like base engined versions of the original Punto, Ford Ka, 1.0 litre Vauxhall Corsa etc. Or how about one of the old Minis? They make great first cars, cheap to run, great fun, and they hold their value too. I know it stinks when you're 17 and the insurance costs more than the car, but keep your nose clean and in a few years you'll be able to afford something a bit more fun.

something with a small engine mate, the 1st year is always expensive!! wat i did was bought a fiat panda (old) and insure fully comp, that way you can drive any car!!!

how about a smart car very cheap to insure and fun to drive and the best thing is the mpg will give you at least 50 miles to the gallon with fuel prices at the moment you will save lots of £££'s Good luck getting the right car.

Remember it's not just the car that affects the insurance. other things that will affect the price (which might explain the difference for your friend) are things like: where it's parked - busy road? cul de sac? on the road? on a driveway? in a lockable garage? how you'll use it - now and again? social? commuting? other family members with the same insurance company - this can get you (and them) discounts. also worth looking at this: http://www.theaa.com/insurance/car-insurance-groups.html

Its not just about the car. You state £1059 for a 1.4 Clio from 1994........I drive a 57 Golf GT sport and I pay the same price for insurance and im a year older than you and Ive written off a car at non fault. Its about your job, where you live, how many cars in the home, mileage. For example, when I worked for an insurance company, I changed a guys job from BAKER in a BAKERY to BAKER in a BAKERS and it went down £200! Insurance is very sensative, so have a play around first but keep it truthful!
