Do car sales people make good money?

  • I am just curious how much they make, because I am car shopping right now, and we have actually walked out of two dealerships because the salesmen could not be bothered or interested in selling me a car. The one dealership, we are return customers and used to get good service, but we were not happy. Selling a$ 40,000 dollar car I think would be a motivation to me?

    Make sure you're realistic with your offers. If you're lowballing, it's likely your own fault they won't sell you a car. Also, being rude or disrespectful to a salesperson won't get you anywhere. Treat them kindly, and if they're a trustworthy salesperson, they'll do the same. By the way, the commission a salesperson makes has little to do with the price of the car. Commission could potentially be more on a less expensive vehicle. Most car salesmen don't make much. The very top salesmen are lucky to make 6 figures, while most probably average between $30,000-$60,000 per year.

Know this right now: The price of the vehicle has NOTHING...NOTHING to do with a salesman commission. Commissions are based on profit of the vehicle. PERIOD! So, if the vehicle you are looking at had an MSRP of 50,000.00, and they are discounting it to 40,000.00, well then I wouldn't bend over backwards for you either. Example: INVOICE on car: 39,999.00 You are paying: 40,000.00 Profit: 1.00 Commission (at my dealership): 75.00 (yes, I'm not bullsh!tt!n ya AT ALL!) Example #2: INVOICE (again): 35,000.00 You are paying: 40,000.00 Profit: 5000.00 Commission: 1250.00 I WOULD bend over backwards for you then :-) Commissions in car sales is NOT based on overall price of the car as in real estate. You did not give us enough information either. How much was the discount? What TYPE of vehicle is this? You know what, if you were "quite displeased", well then, F*&KING go somewhere else. Problem solved. Yeah, yeah, now edit your question and complain about me too, but I don't care. 100.00 isn't going to make or break ANY of us salesman out there.
