Which acoustic guitar should I buy? Which is the best?

If I buy an acoustic-electric guitar, will I actually get the best of both worlds?

  • Say I were to get http://www.guitarcenter.com/Martin-00CXAE-Acoustic-Electric-Guitar-100895267-i1148386.gc - would I get a good electric sound when playing electric? This one looks more acoustic-oriented. On the other hand, http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Epiphone-ES175-Reissue-Electric-Guitar?sku=517414 seems like it would play better as electric and you would lose some of the pure acoustic sound that we all love. Please tell me which one will let me play both better, if possible, and if not, I suppose I'll have to purchase an electric and an acoustic.

The Epiphone is technically a semi-hollow body guitar and would sound great. Though it is suited a little more for electric, in my opinion. It has the double humbuckers that would really give it a fat sound. The body of the acoustic guitar is what really gives its deep sound and resonance. You're going to sacrifice some of that deep sound when you go with the semi-hollow body. On the other hand, the Martin guitar is an excellent acoustic guitar. The body should give it a fuller sound than the Epiphone. The drawback, in my opinion is that the pickups aren't quite as good as a standard electric and the resonance of the acoustic body will actually start getting feedback if you feed it too much electricity. My opinion is that I'd rather have solid body guitar (like a les paul or something) that does electric and then a nice acoustic guitar for acoustic. For you, though, it really depends on what you want to do. Do you like playing the blues and soloing a la Brian Setzer or Eric Clapton? Then I would recommend the epiphone. Or you're more into playing rhythm and singing at the same time (a la jack johnson or something), I think the martin would give you a richer tone and a more intimate acoustic experience.

>>If I buy an acoustic-electric guitar, will I actually get the best of both worlds?<< No, not at all. An acoustic electric is at its heart an acoustic guitar that also has a built-in pickup. The pickup allows you to amplify the guitar's acoustic sound when playing in a large room. It still sounds like an acoustic guitar, but louder. This is because the pickup is not a magnetic pickup like real electric guitars use, but a piezo element under the saddle designed specifically to retain the guitar's acoustic sound. I like Martin guitars - I own two of them - but that one is all-plywood, not something I'd want to buy. The Epi ES175 is a true electric guitar in that it has magnetic pickups. It's a hollow body electric, much favored by jazz players. While it will produce a sound when unamplified, it's not going to sound anything like a typical acoustic guitar. I own a guitar similar to this (Ibanez AF-85) and the only time I play it unamplified is when I'm trying not to disturb my family while practicing since it's so quiet. In my opinion you're better off with two guitars, one acoustic and one electric. Good luck.

It depends on how you play. While an acoustic/electric can well mimic the sound of an electric (pickups do not make TOO much of a difference, if you have the right amp, they won't matter too much), it lacks the neck needed for higher electric playing. I would say DEFINITELY go for the Martin. Not only do you get the higher string access, but Martin is an incredible brand. Remember though, you can't have the best of both world at the same time (usually). Strings make an incredible difference and it is hard (NOT impossible) to find a set good for both acoustic and electric playing.

The closest to the best of both world's is either the Epiphone Ultra (1 or 2), or the Fender Acoustasonic Tele. The Ultra still can ustilize both the bridge and neck humbuckers, but you can also use a pickup above the neck that sounds like an acoustic guitar. The Acoustasonic uses something similiar, except only it's neck pickup can be used because the acoustic pickup is around where the bridge would be. The difference. About $200-400. You can get the Ultra's one or 2 for used for 500-600. New they cost $700. Acoustasonic Tele's. $1000 new, maybe $800-900 used.
