Electromagnetic Pulse and Electronics?
-
Alright, a magnetic storm in Canada in 1989 knocked out all power in Quebec. So here's a question to any scientifically minded people. Are some types of electronics more "EMP resistant" than other types? For example, would old school hand held radios, the clunky kind from the 70s, be less likely to be shorted out than a cellphone?

Answer:
The electronics in the 70's would be more 'robust' due to bigger bits of silicon in the transistors and less complexity. BUT the modern handset would be better screened and probably operate a much higher frequency (which would make the antenna less highly tuned to the common EMP wavelengths), also, the tracks on the circuit board would be much shorter (which act as antennas).
