How To Crochet Turkish Edging?

What does this section of the crochet pattern want me to do?

  • With RS facing, join A with sc in end of Row 1; working in ends of rows across long side edge, This is the part of the crochet pattern is kicking my butt. I haven't crocheted in a long time so I'm rusty when it comes to reading a pattern and I don't understand exactly what I need to do. Can someone explain in a different way what I am supposed to be doing? If it matters this part is the beginning section to some edging.

  • Answer:

First you need to determine which is your right side. If your pattern doesn't specify a particular side as the "right" side, your first row worked into your foundation chain is your right side. The beginning tail will be on your left. Then take your color yarn which is specified as A. Join that yarn at the end of your completed Row 1. This will be in a corner. They want you to join with a single crochet. Since it is for an edging and you are going to go all the way round and join to this beginning stitch, then you can do the join of your new yarn any way you want to. Just make sure you put a single crochet stitch there since that is specified. In other words, if you join with a slip stitch, for example, make sure you don't forget to put a single crochet there. This is particularly important if you have more than one round to your edging. There is something missing in your instructions. It doesn't say what stitch they want you to work across the long side. I am going to assume single crochet since you are joining with a single crochet. It also doesn't tell you how many stitches you need to end up with. Is the long side where your foundation chain is or the side of your work? If the right side of your work is facing you, and you are to start in the end of Row 1, to me that would be the corner by your foundation row, so you would be working along the foundation chain. If they mean the other end of that row, then you will be working along the side of your work. Either way, they want you to join your new color. If you are working along the side, I generally work 1 sc in any single crochet rows and 2 sc in any double crochet rows. If your rows are in dc, you can work around the post or into the post. Around the post is faster. I personally use a hook one size smaller for my side edging as I find it keeps my work flat, but not everyone does that. It depends on your personal tension. If you are working into the remaining chain of the foundation chain, then you work one stitch in each chain. If you have to go all the way around anyway, it may not matter which corner in which you begin. The rest of your edging instructions may give a clue as to whether this matters or not. Hope that is some help.

With right side facing, using colour A, you work a sc in the end stitch of every row along the long side edge.

After joining colour A on the end of the long side, continue with single crochets , one in each previously made row or:----- If there are loose ends of yarn on the ends of the rows, work your single crochets over them. It is difficult to say without seeing the pattern.
