How to treat sleep paralysis?

  • Ive had this my whole life (im 14) but last night it got BAD. I woke up and couldnt move or talk and i was hallucinating. How can i stop this from happening again? I am scared to fall asleep.

  • Answer:

There isn't really anything you can do to definitley stop it, but lots of things help get rid of it. I'm no expert but i heard that not sleeping on your back helps, so don't fall asleep on your back. Make sure you get plenty of sleep and if you wake up in the middle of the night, move around a bit, change your sleeping position - this stops your body from 'falling asleep' before your mind. Of you wake up in sleep paralysis, you can end it quickly by doing things like wiggling your toes and fingers, try moving your eyes and blinking, try moving your lips or facial muscles and the most important one: REMAIN CALM. One time i had sleep paralysis, i heard a childlike voice calling my name. It seriously creeped me out because usually i dont hear voices. I tried to get out of it but couldn't, then i panicked. I desperatley tried to move and scream and it only made things worse, it felt like i was being pushed off my bed and it was terrifiying. Normally, i stay calm and do most the things above and i wake up withing 10 seconds, that just prooves that panicking makes it worse.

I was reading about this the other day, I think I searched something about sleep. If you wake up in REM sleep, you can experience sleep paralysis. Look up melatonin, maybe just 1 mg will help you sleep better, talk to your parents about it, it is all natural and it monitors your sleep/waking cycles. I think it is your best chance to get over this, but read about the sleep cycles also! Once you understand it it won't be so scary. You weren't hallucinating you were probably dreaming while aware. You will be fine, don't be scared to go to sleep, with melatonin it also relaxes you and takes away anxiety, so that would be great. You can adjust your dosage, if you are sleepy during the day after you wake up then take a half of a one mg. Most people use about 1 mg a night, although many adults take 5 or 10 mgs.

Sleep paralysis is a symptom, not a disease so it can't be treated. make sure you are getting enough sleep for one. Also, find out if you snore. You might not know it if you do, I didn't. If you are snoring you might need breathe right strips. If you snore even with those, see if you can get a sleep study done you might have apnea.

Do you have an iPhone or some other type of smart phone? Download one of these sleep apps.. Relax Melodies has a mode for very deep sleep. Use your headphones and choose the deep sleep setting. It's a very cheap thing to try. Good luck.
