Is fluoride in toothpaste dangerous?

Question about fluoride in toothpaste?

  • I am hearing conflicting views on the beneficial vs. harmful effects of using toothpaste with fluoride in it. Is it harmful? I have been using store bought toothpaste my whole life. I just want to know if homemade toothpaste (baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and oil of peppermint) would be safer without any of the potentially harmful chemicals (including fluoride?) in store bought toothpaste. Also, there is a homemade toothpaste recipe that calls for grapefruit seed extract. What about that ingredient?

Hi Kasey Pink....... I think you are right to be concerned. Other than what others have said with regards the potential harms of fluoride and possible intent behind some of the fluoridation, they used to give fluoride to those with hyperthyroidism as a means of controlling that and thus dampening down the thyroid gland's hyperactivity. This of course implies that ordinarily, fluoride is toxic to an otherwise normally functioning gland and especially to a sub-optimally functioning gland. Thus fluoride would not help anyone with borderline hypothyroidism or full-blown hypothyroidism. Tea certainly contains fluoride naturally.... in fact it is a known fluoride accumulator: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15237954 You might want to bear that in mind if you drink tea. Herbal teas such as chamomile and mint teas are virtually fluoride free. If you want a tea that may be similar in flavour to ordinary tea [ http://www.itmonline.org/arts/honeybush.htm ] but one that is virtually fluoride free and naturally caffeine free, look out for honeybush tea. It is also rich in antioxidants: http://209.85.229.132/search?q=cache:c0ruTb_eScwJ:www.port-trading.com/tea_nutrients.html+rooibos+tea+fluoride&cd=6&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk&client=firefox-a Use filtered water. If you don't use filtered water, make sure you empty your kettle each time as fluoride concentrates in kettle water after boiling... http://www.fluoridealert.org/pesticides/suggestions.html You can make your own toothpaste certainly but you can also find in health shops many toothpastes that do not have fluoride and only natural ingredients. Look out for these labels: Toms of Maine*, Sarakan** [also SLS free], Kingfisher fennel toothpaste, Aloe Dent Aloe Vera toothpaste [also do a mouthwash], etc, depending on where you live [US/UK, etc]. * This company makes different versions, depending on your needs/requirements....i.e. SLS-free [non-foaming] or with SLS, fluoride-free or with fluoride, etc. ** Sarakan is good because it has an extract of Salvadora persica, they also do a mouthwash too. Salvadora persica: the "toothbrush" tree, has been used in its natural state as twigs for centuries to keep teeth and gums healthy by those on the Arabian and Indian sub-continents certainly. Many Muslims use this because the Prophet [sallallahu 'alayhi wa salaam] used it and recommended it to his followers for good oral hygiene. There is quite a bit of scientific interest in it because it has been shown to have good anti-plaque properties [ http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17823507?itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum&ordinalpos=8 , http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15560804?itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum&ordinalpos=14 ], anti-fungal [candida] properties [ http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19899011?itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum&ordinalpos=2 ], and some anti-bacterial properties [ http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18672998?itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum&ordinalpos=7 ]. I would avoid grapefruit seed extract [GSE] as most commercial ones may contain benzethonium Chloride, and in fact its known antibacterial action has been attributed to that of late. You could use oil of oregano instead as it has known powerful anti-bacterial properties in its own right and wild oregano has been used in food preservation for thousands of years apparently [ http://www.wildoreganooil.co.uk/wild-oregano-oil-story.html ]. Not sure on quantities however, you would need to do a little research. Peppermint oil used for flavour and "freshness" in many toothpastes may also has some preservation properties in its own right. If you want to use hydrogen peroxide you would need to make sure you store it in a dark container ....thus shielded from UV light. Hope that helps. Best wishes... Salaams.

Jim is wrong :: i grew up drinking tap water as a kid & it gave me a mild case of dental fluorosis =\ the nazi's used it on their victims [it's known to put holes in the brain & is suppose to make people dumb & docile] & if the fda cared so much about our health: they wouldn't approve many of the things they do: so it makes me believe they spend the money & time to add it to water with ulterior motives =[ if it were so good for us: why wouldn't they advertise & promote it? sparklett's water offered a fluoridated water http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4XhhTF7vRM there is fluoride that exists in nature that is good for you: but that's not the kind they add to water :: so i have a dual:media shower head filter & they do have toothpastes without sodium fluoride in them but they are usually about twice as expensive as regular toothpastes :: the sls found in most popular toothpastes is bad for you as well! http://www.healthy-communications.com/slsmostdangerousirritant.html

There have been anti-flouridation fanatics around ever since flouridating water started. It's just another one of those things that some people have to rant and rave about. It is true that concentrated sodium flouridate is poisonous - that is because it is concentrated. But when it is used in a tiny amount it isn't poisonous...just like, you can drink tap water which has been chlorinated, but if you drank BLEACH (which is concentrated Sodium Hypochlorite) you would die. If you did not treat the water with something, dangerous disease organisms would get into the water - diseases like typhoid, typhus and cholera and millions and millions of people would DIE. So drinking water has to be TREATED in order to make it safe. The low levels of clorine or florine have an antimicrobial affect but do NOTHING to harm the human body. Yet, you cannot rationalize with people who are convinced they are being poisoned ON Purpose. It's like talking to a crazy person. The fact is that a tiny amount of sodium flouride and I mean TINY, is not going to hurt you. And it strengthens the calcium in the teeth to prevent cavities. All you are going to do is get more cavities and of course, that means, loose your teeth and pay dental bills while you are at it. States that have no flouridation have significantly higher levels of dental disease.

fluorine and chlorine are known carcinogens. fluoride also mottles bone. it tends to damage the thyroid, and tends to make people dull-headed and passive. this is why the germans and russians put it in the water supply of their prisoners of war during world war two. this is also why it was a planned by the cpusa to put it in the water supply.

Mr E

There are plenty of toothpastes without flouride... Check www.iherb.com Grapeseed extract is used as a preservative - if you make a toothpaste without water there is no need for it

think of this: toothpaste has fluoride water has fluoride and. rat poison has fluoride prozac and antidepressants have fluoride and..why do they tell you not to swallow toothpastes? also..fluoride causes dental fluorosis and bone fluorosis ...also can lead to bone cancer. please just look it up on the internet..theres millions of articles on it... now the only fluoride free toothpastes u cn find are herbal ones..and if theres an Indian (east indian) store in your area..go look for "dabur toothpaste" it has ayurvedic herbs and is fluoride free...just so u know im indian and im all for natural stuff :D edit: all people who are saying drink filtered or distilled water...filtered and bottled water DO have fluoride in them...fluoride can ONLY be filtered from SPECIAL filters..that means none of the home filter systems filter out fluoride....if u dont believe me..check out the filter manuals. 2nd edit: i was in th grocery store and looked around, the only bottled water that has LOW (natural) amount of fluoride is natural spring water, just go to your store and check, the fluoride quantity should be about 0.1 ppm to 0.3 ppm..anything more than that is not worth it..i live in toronto and the tap water fluoride is 0.8ppm :O

Grand Rapids, Mich. has become the most recent city to question the practice of fluoridating public water, as part of a growing tendency for local governments to question the use of many chemicals that formerly been taken for granted. “I think this pattern has been growing because there is better environmental health research that draws connections between low levels of chemical exposure and changes in our bodies,” said Dr. Howard Hu of the University of Michigan. “As the research has become more sophisticated, it shows that environmental toxicants can do other things beyond just kill you: they can stunt your growth, change behavior and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.” Grand Rapids was the first city in the world to fluoride its public water supply, based on assurances from the government that the chemical reduces the risk of tooth decay while posing no serious risks. But based on a number of studies linking fluoride to problems with the thyroid, kidneys, central nervous system and skeletal system – including cancers – the city’s director of environmental sustainability, Corky Overmyer, has ordered a new review of the scientific evidence concerning the risks and benefits of the chemical. additionaly the nazi's during ww2 added it to prisoners drinking water to keep them apathetic. look on a flouride toothpaste warning not to swallow it and to supervise children making sure they don't swallow it. jim, I'd like to see the evidence showing more cavities without flouride in the water. also I don't like being medicated without my consent. I also worked at the Grand Rapids filtration plant when they approved flouride, that's the reason I have filters to remove it from my drinking water.

Small amounts introduced in water most likely have a slight beneficial effect but i am skeptical about its inclusion in toothpaste bringing any benefit----the only historical data that is long term was where Flouride was present in the well water of someplace in ? Texas ? Personally I have lots of crap in my tap water and have a water softener also ! I Have a water still that I use for all drinking, cooking water use, including my pets water, so the flouride never gets into me through the water and as far as any toothpaste increment I spit that out anyway so if there is any it must be topical contact only, then with teeth and gums not my innards ! My teeth have been fairly good but that is the result of conscientious care not some damned toothpaste, water chemical !! Some dentists have "Flouride Treatment" procedures but what they are and how effective I have no idea---mostly for children anyway not 65 + like me.

There are a few toothpastes without fluoride. Usually you can only get them in health shops. It is best not to have fluoride because its only other application is as a rat poison, for which it is the sole ingredient. It is very harmful, makes your teeth and bones go brittle. The other thing to watch out for is what tube the toothpaste comes in, make sure it has no lead. The best toothpaste contain Myrrh or Neem oil, they both contain safe natural anti bacterial agents. :) Practicing Shaman... quantum physcis rocks

As an old teacher of mine would say " fluoride will give you the best teeth in the grave yard." A home made one would be better, I have not heard of the grapefruit extract one .
