Skinny Horse won't gain weight. Why?

My horse hast lost, wont gain weight?

  • my filly is 2 years old will be 3 in may, my boyfriend said his did the same thing, and it was caused by the loss of the baby teeth... is this right? and will she put more weight, muscle mass. ect. when her adult teeth have come in? note: i have wormed her and she has had plenty to graze on since i got her in october, 2010 if i cant get a good answer or solution then im taking her to the vet, thank you

    You should definitely have the vet check her teeth. She is at the age where she is shedding her caps (baby teeth). If a cap gets stuck, it can cause them pain, particularily when eating. She is also a growing horse. Graze is probably not enough for her. Get her on a high quality feed and a mineral supplement, in the form of a lick tub or powder. You might need to add some hay to her diet as well. To add extra calories without adding carbs, pour 1/2 cup of corn or soybean oil over her feed.

Young fillies eat a TON. They tend to eat more than the older ones since they're growing so much. Try giving her supplements (like some alfalfa pellets and equine junior, or something) and make sure she has a lot of food.

i would have got the vet straight away and ignore what your boyfriend said it always to be better than sorry.

For the teeth, I recommend finding a qualified equine dentist as many vets don't do a thorough complete job on the teeth. You said you wormed her but was a worming that would take care of all worms? Tape worms usually need a different wormer. You didn't say if you give her any hay and you do need to feed her some grain. Don't go over board on the amount of grain and I would suggest if you aren't doing any of these foods yet to start with them before adding other things to her food. With a lot of horses it can take a while to put weight back on so you might need to be patient. If you decide you need to add a supplement to the grain, we like a product from 4source.com.
