I want to play my drums(in real time) over my recorded guitar tracks. whats the best way to go about it?

to describe my situation in more detail: i pretty much just want to get tighter with my rhythm and timing on the drums. almost definitely, this will only ever be for home use. i just like making noise that sounds decent to me and i prob wont ever want to take the show on the road lol. i play a fairly large acoustic drum set. mostly pearl with mostly sabian cymbals. i also play electric guitar. currently im abusin my esp viper the most. im playin through a line6 pod that goes to an old peavey head and 4-12 cabinet. i want to jam with myself. i have a zoom drum machine that i sometimes play the guitar over but that gets boring because im not that great at making beats on the machine and the presets arent too heavy or fast or intricate. its hard to play like a thrash, hardcore, punk, speed, etc, guitar style over them. for a few years ive done the old tascam 4 track cassette recorder method. i would usually record like 2 min of me playing the same riffs or power chords or palm-muted chugging rhythms over and over, then play it back through the halfstack, quick run behind the kit and try to put drums to it. haha, ridiculous right? you can see the drawbacks of this; only having a couple minutes at a shot to practice without having to reset it, hoping that i dont mess up the riff 1 minute into the recording, and so on. what i have in mind is getting a loop station pedal for my guitar. im under the impression that this will allow me to play a riff or verse or pattern only one time on the guitar and be able to have it played back over and over, indefinitely. is this possible or do i have a wrong assumption of the features of these machines. ive looked into some different versions and models of them but none of the reviews mention anyone doing what i want to do. doesnt anybody play both instruments and not have too many friends that they can jam with all the time? how did chuck schuldiner do it when nobody was around? hahaha. if anyone has any recommendations for me, whether its a certain looping pedal or even a completely different plan that would allow me to play my own, acoustic, live drums over my own, recorded guitar tracks, i would appreciate it greatly. i dont want to go broke but im willing to shell out some cabbage for legit quality/convenience. p.s. ive noticed some of the looping pedals come with the ability to save files that you have recorded into a computer via usb. the only way to get a decent sounding drum track saved to a computer would be to mic the kit, run it to a mixing board, and then to a computer? or are there other ways of saving my own acoustic drum tracks? thanks, if you read this whole mess!!!

Answer:
there's some freeware called, "Audacity" that may be just the thing for you. You'll need to read the directions carefully to make sure you understand all that you need to download. You will need to download the additonal "lame" file, (I think it's called that) if you want to be able to burn your own cd of your recordings to play in an mp3 format. Also, you may also need to extend your pc's memory allowance, or at least I did years ago, but my pc was really old. I don't know how your system is set up, but you will likely need an external pc microphone to pick up the sound. Audacity is a great program with too many features to list, check it out.

I'm a huge fan of live looping myself (or prerecorded samples) - but I like the "organic" style and no relying completely on computers. BOSS-RC20L is a great looping pedal. Allows you to loop up to 16 minutes and save up to ten phrases (songs/loops). I use this one for the prerecorded delayed drum samples and or some drones. It is also a great pedal to use for recording a whole song (verse, chorus, layers and all...) and then play drums over it for practice/fun ( i do this as well). Another great looping pedal is the Line 6 DL4 - however this is mostly for really short loops/drones/beats and not so much for entire songs with multiple sections. Though it has some amazing delay effects and sounds so good for guitar, synth,or even vocals. many many bands use this pedal because of its diversity and it's overall simpleness to use. (but it is more of a delay/effects pedal than a looper. If you just want somewhere to easily record some songs, layer over them, and practice drumming - I'd say get the BOSS RC-20XL. It is quite fun! Check out people using them on youtube!
