How to tell your singing from your diaphragm?

  • I've looked at many answers here on how to sing from your diaphragm. I've made sure my shoulders aren't rising and its just my belly going out and in. But it still doesn't feel any different or sound any different when I try singing. So how can you tell that its from your diaphragm not your throat or chest? thanks

    Place your hands just under your ribs and you should feel it sort of 'inflating', like you're breathing but it should go out more. Also you will find it fairly easy to hold a note and when you sing it won't sound like you're straining your voice. Another thing is if you are singing from your throat, the note will 'wobble' and won't sound very pleasant, you will also be hearing yourself louder than how everyone else is hearing you. If you mean your 'chest voice' then it is not a bad thing at all to be singing with your chest voice, you could still be singing from your diaphragm.

First thing i suggest is hum at a point that connects your diaphragm, chest, and throat it will take a while be patient. Its usually just the note your voice first naturally hits. To find the feeling breathe in so your stomach puffs to the fullest extent and push down. It feels like a pressure right above your belly button and a line up to your chin. Now slowly let out the air, this excercise will help. Another is to breathe in as much as you can and them take small sips of air. Also learning screamo can really help weather you like that genre or not. I am a much better singer for learning screaming.
