What are some good soulful piano chords?

What to play instead of just solid chords on piano?

  • When ever I learn a song to play its always so boring because its always solid chords with both hands. For example, when I try to accompany a singer to a song say Taylor Swift, Love story. Its so boring because all i am doing is holding and repeating solid chords constantly, I was wondering how to "dress up" the piano playing as some people call it and add a little rhythm to the piano playing while someone is singing.

  • Answer:

What I like to do to do is either mess about with the rhythm using the same chord, or try inverting the chord (playing the same notes in a different order), or you could try playing an arpeggio or break the chord (play the whole chord then play each note one by one). I like to sing while playing the piano so it can be hard doing the final whilst concentrating on singing, but if you're accompanying someone it should be a breeze if you've got experience

One thing you could do is break up the chord into a broken chord. I like the flowing, gentle sound this produces. Or play the chord as an octave chord. Hope this helps! I always enjoy playing around and changing songs from the original music.

learn to scale. in theory when a band would sit down to write a song "leads, riffs, and, solos" are written of; following a certain scale from the key note or root note of a chord, in reality songs are written however they come together. learning your scales will provide a varity of opportunities for you, and expand your personal style and ability as well
