Singing through your Diaphragm?

  • How do you sing through your diaphragm? I can't tell if im singing the right way or not!

  • Answer:

Hi Brianna V, There's a massive amount of emphasis placed on singing through your diaphragm these days, and it's true, sweet, smooth vocals occur with free flowing and deep diaphragmatic breaths. I'll call them "deep breaths" from this point on to save on typing!! In my own experience of singing it's not as easy as it sounds to produce a nice deep breath. This is because it isn't really something you produce at all. It happens naturally when you're in the right frame of mind. I've now been singing for a lot of time and I've felt beautiful, deep diaphragmatic breaths on many occasions, accompanied by a loose and sweet sounding voice. However sometimes I'm still unable to feel this smooth singing. It isn't something that you perfect one day and then it happens all the time. A really good way to produce a diaphragmatic breath is to forget about it. Forget about singing well. Concentrate more on how your body feels and the movement of air. Try and relax. It doesn't matter if your voice makes some weird sounds to begin with. Once you begin to relax into your singing you'll breath deeply and naturally and you'll be amazed at how wonderfully free this feels and what a great sound your voice produces naturally. This can be a little frustrating because we'd so love to experience it straight away, and this might happen. But the quickest way for this to happen is to forget about producing it and let go. Relax. Have fun! And believe me, you'll know when it starts to happen!!! It's such a great feeling. I know a teacher that follows this philosophy, and I believe he's offering some free online material for singers. It also features guitar, but it may still be of some help for you. You can find his material at http://singing4guitar.com/ Good luck! Michael

sure you can - here's how look in a mirror - watch your shoulders - now take a breath to sing - did your shoulders go up and down - - - - - YES then NO - you are not using your diaphragm ____when you can take a breath to sing and your shoulders stay level - - - you are on your way to do it! here are some other tips one of the fun paradoxes of singing - is practice to improve your lower register - practice your upper register and to improve your upper notes - yep - practice your lower notes make sure your vocal cords are giving you your bang for the buck take them all the way down to a vocal pop (that's lower than low - AND it sounds yucky )you will slow down to 4-5 "pops" a second - that how low you go - and you train your vocal cords to "meet" each other and get the airiness out of your singing POSTURE - when singing - stand feet about shoulder wide - one foot in front of the other - on the balls of your feet (dynamic tension) and do NOT lock your knees or you are comin' down! (LOL) use your diaphragm - no shoulder moving up and down when you breathe do NOT wear a tight belt - allow the abs to move keep your torso aligned (see a Andrea Bocelli video) don't turn your head to the side keep it face forward - that aligns your chest- mouth -forehead - resonance areas and above all - relax - have fun all the best
