Is there a career that combines backgrounds in Animation and Psychology?
-
My two main passions in academia are psychology and animation (specifically storyboarding). I would hate to choose between the two, leaving the other subject to be only a hobby. I want to find a career that combines the two. My college counselors are less than helpful on the subject. My animations teachers tell me that psychology would help my to give more depth to my characters, but that seems equally one-sided. I feel I have a strong knack for both and I want to make optimal use of both interests. I often think about ways I could use animation in experiments to test perception or to teach psychology concepts. Also, I sometimes think of the mental and motor skills that one must develop to become an animator, character designer, director, etcetera. I wonder if big animation studios would have a need for an industrial / organizational psychologist who understands firsthand how it works. Or maybe there would be a need for someone with research background to survey test audiences who are shown pieces of their films in progress. Perhaps companies that specialize in special education resources could make use of an animator to make carefully designed educational cartoons for autistic kids. I feel there should be some rare niche for someone like me to fill. Of course, rare niches are hard to find.

Not sure if this will help, but my nephew is a developer of games. he minored in psych. I believe there are many ways for you to combine the two fields. Especially if you go on to do graduate work. One of the ways I recommend people identify what direction to take is to look at job ads for careers in their fields of interest. Highlight what you like about the different jobs. Do this exercise several times over a month or so. You will begin to see a pattern developing in one field or the other and it will be based on your interests not anyone else. It will begin to lead you to one path or the other. You can find industrial relation type jobs on Monster or Career Builder. Here are a couple of sites with jobs to explore for the animation. Good luck!
