Can my employer suddenly drop my work hours? (UK)?
-
I have a contract which guarantees me a minimum of 7 hours work but for the last year and a half I've been working on average 30 hours per week. Are there any laws which would guarantee my hours can't be cut to the minimum because I don't want to do night work? Essentially I've been told I either have to work nights (which I have been for a while) or have my hours reduced down to 7 per week. Someone at work seems to think there's a law which states if you've been on 30 hours per week for 6 months or something that they can't drop your hours below that because you're financially used to the hours. I'm not sure that's true though. Is there anything I can do to get off night work and keep my hours? I work in retail.

Answer:
I think he can reduce because your contract of employment states 7 hours as a minimum. He will view it that it is just your good fortune that you have had such a long spell at higher hours.

they can cut your hours as they please. they gave you a choice. work nights, or start looking for a new job.

Your contract says 7 hours so legally that is all you need to be offered yes you might be doing 30 hours regularly, but that does not change your contracted hours There's no law against it, so either accept the new shift pattern, or work 7 hours as stated in your contract or maybe even look for another job
