Nursing or Psychology?

Is psychology and nursing worth double majoring in?

  • Alright, I am thinking of double majoring in psychology and nursing. I absolutely love psychology and nursing. I am minoring in psychology but I want to know if it is worth taking a few classes during the summer to finish up that degree. I want to be a psychiatric nurse when I graduate. Would a degree in psychology help that job aspect? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  • Answer:

Oh yes, a degree in psychology will most definitely come in handy during your training later on. Once you get your bachelors and take your RN licensing exam you can start working in the mental health field as an RN-BSN and then you go on your psychiatic certifications and become either a Certified Nurse Specialist-Psychiatric Mental Health or a Psychiatric Mental Health-Nurse Practitioner if you want a Master's.

You cannot do a double major with one major (nursing) being a competitive program. Nursing is only a full time day or evening program which means you have no time to do another major at the same time and I think the college would not allow it. Pick either psychology OR nursing but don't try to do both at the same time. The same goes with all other competitive health care programs...you can't do that full time and do another major at the same time. And no a degree in psychology won't help you land a job in nursing unless you are going for a nursing job that is related to psychology. Work experience and NURSING education is what RN employers care about only. Also it won't really help you get into a RN program because many people are going back to college, having completed another degree, to get a degree in nursing.

No I don't think a psych degree would help in the psych nursing aspect. I worked psych and still do at times. Now if you are thinking of furthering your career and maybe going for masters it would give you a better understanding from that perspective but then the way nurses think about care of the patient and the psych think on the care of the patient could clash....research it. You can basically do psych nursing with just nursing degree.
